The article of interpreting is “Defining New Media Isn’t easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. The main content of the article analyzes what is new media, it defines new media as a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills and processes that change quickly, by mentioning the nesting characteristic that connect global economics, politics and exchange of ideas, the article also discusses about the drawbacks of the new media by drawing attention to the lack of pricary, uncertainty property.
ReplyDeleteThe use of language of the article is very formal, the word choice is accurate and picky. The authors of the article first introduce the properties of new media system, they reveal that the new media has its nesting property to connect different information by hyperlinks, the authors once say “Take for instance, the single most influential tool in casual research and data-storage: Wikipedia. It is virtually impossible to search an article that is published on Wikipedia without coming across a hyperlink to another page of data.” This sentence uses formal obkective language, it doesn’t have any leisured dictions. The article is more reporting rather than an literary essay, it does not contain much literary devices. Also the tone is neutral, and the descriptions are all objective based on different real life examples as evidence, the author describes both pros and cons about the new media, the pros as the educational and financial uses of the internet, the cons as the lack of privacy of the internet.
The method of persuasion used in this article should mostly be logos. This is because the large use of examples to support the article to achieve the purpose of writing.
For instance, when discuss about the exchange of ideas and images, the authors list the educational uses of images of the new media, also when they discuss about the nesting property of the media, they provide the example of hyperlinks in wikipedia to support their argument. The main purpose of this article is to let the audience understand the media, to inform the audience, which both authors achieve their goal by using logos.
The text is from the New Media institute, “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid.
ReplyDelete“New Media” is a 21st century term that stands for all that related to internet, technology, skills and processes. It can be characterized by the variegated use of images, words and sounds. These networks of image sounds and text data are different from old media. The definition of “new media” evolves and expand time through time, more people use it in different ways for different purpose. It is so large that it has huge impact on many categories of the society. New media is an enabler and the new primary source. It becomes primary because it is needed to report and collect data by the other sources. It allows people to engage in political, cultural, social and economic action.
The authors’ tones are questioning, speculative and indirect. The writers state in the beginning the question to ask is “what isn’t new media?” instead of “what is new media?” make the readers think and try to find the answer which will have tones of it, since the “new media and new media communications is continually evolving and as a result, its definitions evolves as well.” The authors use a combination of structures; they give the cause and effect of new media as stated in the very first sentence “by business, causes, communications and a multitude of others”, new media has “a profound effect” on different categories of society and it is “neutral new technology evolving all the time”. They also give several of definition and description for new media such as “a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills and processes”, “new media is also characterized by an astonishing and uncharted level of personal experience/exposure” etc. The authors also give a comparison/contrast of the new media vs. old media. The problem of the media or it will become good or bad is depend on how the users use it. The claims that the authors made are correct and valid but not certain because of the evolvement and extension of new media.
The authors write the text not in a straightforward way, they show that the new media actually does not have a “stop” and are we “constructing the destination” for them or “blindingly falling into its clutches through necessities and paradigms”. The authors use logos, which appeals to reason and pathos, which reveals to the values, emotions, beliefs and the audiences. They hit into the readers’ brain, attract the readers by stating questions, provide a broad information about new media; the readers will think and put themselves into a “wondering” situation. At the end, they also state “[new media] definitions evolves” which left behind for the reader with their own imagination, questions and different answers for “Where is new media really going?”.
"Defining New Media isn't easy" expresses the general idea of how the author thinks and define the meaning of "New Media". He describes and shows many aspects that the New Media may be realted to and analyze how that aspect affect what we think about new media.
ReplyDeleteOn "Defining New Media Isn't Easy", the authors state with a very analytical tone and provide many examples that can support their own ideas of new media. For example, the authors use new media to describe the new development of technology like the cell phone is old media and smart phone is the new media. Moreover, the authors also include the tenets of that can help the readers to understand the definition of media like Nesting and so on. The authors also use the New Media as digital device. He says the new media is the globe's commercial skeleton and so on.
The authors use Logos as method of persuasive in this paragraph and he has quite successful on persuasive. However, i think he needs more specific example to prove the validity of his claims instead of just statin ghis claims all over the passage.
The title of the text written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid is “Defining New Media Isn`t Easy.” In a general sense, this article talks about what new media is and how it is constantly changing meaning because it is evolving regularly and new discoveries and ways of communicating change it. It talks about the effects it has, especially economically, as it an important part of world commercialization and businesses. It discusses as well how new media has main characteristics that might have come from past media forms. In the same way, it shows new media`s influence in society and its actions.
ReplyDeleteThe context of this writing is the definition of new media and the ways in which it is present in the day-to-day life, as well as in businesses. This is clearly seeing in the text as it is constantly talking about many characteristics of new media that can be used to define it, as well as how these change constantly. In the same way, it makes statements about how new media influences economics and companies. An example of this is when it ways: “Economically, new media is the globe`s commercial skeleton.” The tone in this text is confident, interested, modest, reflective and straightforward. We can see a few of these in the next quote: “The question of new media is not a question that merely indexes new toys or tools. Rather, there is a qualitative question that lurks beneath the shinning surface of the screen (…).” The structure of this text is very well made as it is separated by topics, but there is a logical connection between themes, so it takes you easily trough the reading. The structure is clear as it gives an idea and then an example of why that idea is true. The claims are valid because the authors have sufficient evidence to base their facts on, as well as they give examples to prove their point better.
The method of persuasion used in this text is mostly logos, as it persuades using reason in every argument he makes based on credible evidence. It is logos too because its arguments are logical and are presented in a good order. In the same way, we find ethos too because the writer`s thoughts are clearly in the text. The authors did achieve their purpose because they were able to explain various definitions of what new media is, as well as the reasons why there is not only one definition. This is because new media is constantly evolving.
Firstly, the name of the article is "Defining New Media Isn't Easy" and its written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. The article is discussing the term New Media, and is firstly defining the term, before they are discussing about the subject media. They state the negative and positive sides about New Media. In the end, they conclude that it is personal whether you believe New Media is "good or bad".
ReplyDeleteThe tone in the essay is formal, and the stated claims in the essay was taken from different sources; which gives it more credibility than if it was taken from only one source. On the other hand; the authors uses apostrophes and contraction of words that should have been written out, such as "Don't" and "Isn't". The article is firstly stating how New Media should be defined. "New Media can be characterized by the variegated use of images, words, and sounds", claiming that there is no accurate definition of the term New Media, which also is stated in the headline "Defining New Media Isn't Easy". The authors did not give the readers enough information about the negative sides of New Media; they should have included more perspective to the danger of example The Internet, and not only talking about the term New Media. However, the small amount of information included from the authors gives an accurate description of the dangers. "Don't write or reveal anything on line that you wouldn't want the world to know!".
The authors of the article has used a mixture of the two persuasion forms Ethos and Logos, meaning they used both reasoning- with scientific evidence to back up their claims, and credibility- the use of the authors own opinions. The authors should have used a more formal language to get the readers to believe more their point of view, and they should have presented more sides of one case. From a reader's point of view; the conclusion seemed a bit unfinished and they should have put more thought in finishing the article.
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid from New Media Institute. The article mainly touches upon the meaning of New Media. They stated that “new media is a way of organising a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just what those tools and processes are.” New media is everything that broke out from the restriction, added the new dimension. New media is about interaction—two ways instead of one. It doesn’t matter how useful the technology is, it all comes down to the user. They also highlighted that media produce so much changes—connect one country to another with a click. Many businesses/companies are now focused on making the devices that supports new media— new media is controlling the users. Moreover, the briefly went over how hyperlink works in the media, mainly its advantages. They revealed that hyperlink makes research more of a continue process; now that every information are interconnected. Hyperlink allowed us to know deeper and wider on the topics we are researching on, and always aware that the articles could be highly subjectives. Also, they referred to the concern over privacy and opportunities in real world. Lastly, they ended the article by stating that “Regardless, new media and new media communications is continually evolving and as a result, its definitions evolves as well.”
ReplyDeleteThe structure of the article is really neat; they mainly started by trying to define New Media is many different ways. And they also make connection to relatable keys such as “Nesting characteristic” which allow us to understand the New Media better. Then they went on to new subtitle “New Media = Digital Divide?”, “A note on data-collection”, “Social dimensions”, and “Conclusion: rhetorical questions of potential.” The authors developed an idea of New Media as well as relating to its effects and advantages. In the end, they left us with rhetorical questions to follow up the definition of New Media and how we should handle it. The tone of the authors is quite scholarly, they defined the definitions of each terms such as “Nesting is a way of organising the presentation of information according to subjects while paying secondary attention to context.” Wide ranges of vocabulary related to the topic such as “[..]images, words, and sounds” have been used in the articles. The authors did not claim to know anything, they simply discuss the definitions of new media while linking to its effect. The discussion makes the article seem more reliable since the readers receive the knowledge as we are reading.
In my opinion, the authors achieve their point to convince the readers that “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy.” By mainly using logos, the authors defined the terms, present the points, support them with evidence , provide examples. The structure of the article is also nicely structured. The authors convinced the readers to believe their claims by presenting the point—logos. They also use ethos as well, by using scholar tone and style of writing.
Defining New Media Isn't Easy by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid is an article about the new media. In this article, the authors are trying to define what is new media, base on their knowledge as well as their research. The article is divided into five parts and each of them is carefully supported by examples from the authors to help readers understand better and clearer.
ReplyDeleteThis article has a very formal tone with a little bit of casual. The first part of this article is merely about the definition of new media. The author also provide some definite signposts. One of them is the changing of "technology, skills, and processes" that is so quickly that affect new media. An example is "the cell phone in the late 1980's". According to the author, when the phone first showed up, people thought it was part of the new media, but as the world is evolving every day, they now think "that cell phone" is old type of media. People only care about the feature, the style, the material of the phone and forget about the evolution of media, from old media like "letter" to the new media like "cell phone". The author believe that old format of media such as newspapers, books and magazines contain something call "the linear restrictions" which means a "back story" and the "sources are always collated." However, for new media, it is totally different, there are no orders, no rules, no linear restrictions and "elements interact with one another." In the second part, the authors compare new media with the connection of globe's commercial. "New media is not only the product but helps to mould the process of electronic commerce." In the past, people often trade or buy products at the store but with new media, it is much easier. People can purchase online with the help of Internet, a new media "product". Internet affects greatly on the globe's commercial. It really "helps to mould the process of electronic commerce" by connecting both sellers and buyers around the world. Furthermore, the author also provide a new feature of new media, hyperlink. This feature can reduce the time of searching that people spend on the Internet. "Data collections or personal privacy" is mentioned in this article and I totally agree with the quote that say: "Don't write or reveal anything on line that you wouldn't want the world to know. In the last two parts, the authors write a bit about how traditional media now rely on new media sources and come to a conclusion that "as new media is evolving, its definitions evolves as well."
I think the authors have successfully achieve their purpose of defining new media by using mostly Logos but also Pathos. The authors provides lots of examples throughout the article to support their statement. Beside Logos, Pathos is used as a method of persuasion too. The use of language affect readers' emotional response toward the article and their belief of new media.
Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid from New Media Institute wrote a respond to a question ”what is a new media?”. This thought came up after the question did not really grasp a standardized response in public. Therefore in this text, the authors discussing about different styles of new media and how it effects some of the most essential categories in the twenty first century society. Economics, politics and the exchange of ideas are some of crucial part of this community that has had an intense effect from new media nowadays. The author also discuss about how new media brings pros or cons into today’s world since it somehow overwrites the existence of an old-style form of media.
ReplyDeleteThe author claim that New Media is simply a limitless possibility for communication, innovation and education. The way that it organizing technology, skills and processes all the data make them different of what Media used to be. The new organization of data makes new media free from some restrictions of older media formatting such as magazines, books, or newspapers. With such advantages, new media then somehow makes impact to the society. Web and blog writing, trends that are really popular in the media somehow changes the way people structure their basic sentences. It allows people to assemble their information freely, so as an impact social media in general are full with different perspectives and opinions from people around the world. The authors give an example of concerns that emphasize the new media which is privacy. The author warn their reader by saying that we are not suppose to write or reveal anything on line that you would not want the world to know. It is make more sense when people’s lifestyle today in social media has been all about sensationalism that somehow leads to lack of privacy. Throughout the text, the tone is mainly neutral as it basically providing an information and evidence to support the arguments
At the end of the passage the authors toss the argument back to the audience when it says, “it really is up to us to define the digital frontier”. Method of persuasions that being used was Logos. As the author really argued their point of question that they would like to address. By giving credible evidence and strong reasons to support their arguments, the author address their purpose of answering the main question of how defining a new media.
Authors Bailey and Barbara Eber-Schmid called their article "Defining New Media Isn't Easy", which is, frankly speaking, true. In their work it is easy to find rhetorical questions, like "Is media good or bad?" or "Where is new media really going?". Through the whole article they analyze new media and try to find out, what weaknesses and advantages it has. Try to look in the past, after which the difference between the old and new media is not that big, as we prefer to think.
ReplyDeleteThe text is full of rhetorical questions, like " Is media good or bad thing"and "Where is the new media going?, "New Media=Digital Divide?"". Authors keep the style of the text formal and accurate. Each topic is defined, so the reader is able to understand the transition from one thought to another. The definitions of some terms really helped to understand the point of view: "Nesting is a way of organizing of the presentation of information according to subject while paying secondary attention to context.
Even though the authors of the article tried to translate their thoughts to the audience, they had some differences: too many words to the article, it is hard to analyze all information in one piece. Nevertheless, the topic of article was very actual nowadays, in the time of media, and the whole misunderstanding around it. But, as a reader, I wanted to see the author's personal opinion, which I couldn't find. There were many facts and many descriptions with necessary information.
My overall impression about the article is good. I found very interasting information about the topic, which is highly discussed today.
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” is an article, which wrote by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid wrote for The New Media Institute. It talks about the extensively use of new media in the 21st century. “New Media” can be organizes to everything that contains “technology, skills and processes”. The new media changes so “fast” that it is hard to define; the new media is being re-defined everyday by peoples that have different use of it. However, it still needs “some basic tenets like “the variegated use of images, words and sounds”—these are the significant differences from the old media. The new media uses its advantages, which is replacing the old media.
ReplyDeleteBecause it’s a statement article, so the authors used a very direct description of the new media with posting the question of “what is not new media” to delivery their thought, which the new media is now more popular than the old media. The authors stated that “in seeking a definition of new media we need some basic tenets that can help us get a better positive understanding of what new media is beyond what new media isn’t” to oppose their opinions that what a good new media should have—it also shows that new media is somehow same as the old media because it needs a stander too. The authors used the examples of “drop-boxes and support-bases chat center” to show the conception of new media. In the first subtitle it uses rhetorical question to provide the audiences the hided sign of why the new media is more of the “categories of the society” (economic, politics and the exchange of ideas)
I think the authors achieved their purpose very well and its using of Pathos (because its uses a lot rhetorical questions to call up the audiences attention) and Ethos (because its uses a lot facts as the example to prove their ideas of new media).
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid talks about that New Media is a complicated process that continues progressing, innovating and will always change and the characteristics of New Media.
ReplyDeleteThey define new media as a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills and processes that changes constantly. It mentions how new media is different from the old formats (print media) in that this is more freed from linear restrictions. The article mentions the effect of new media in economics and how it has lead to new opportunities and new ways of doing business like electronic commerce. It also talks about the data collecting that new media involves, the different information that we can find on Internet and the social consequences that the whole progress of new media had reached: “New media is an enabler and the new primary source”. But the end result does not have to be negative if we know how to use it.
The context would be the present where new media is used in everyday life. The tone of the text could be analytical as it goes through different aspects in which new media is involved: economics, social dimensions, exchange of ideas. And also in the economic part the tone id positive, benevolent as it talks about how new media has contributed in economics, making the purchase of products easier and more flexible. As it says “ New media is not only the product but helps to mould the process of electronic commerce”.
The method of persuasion used the most would be Logos because the text uses a lot of arguments that are back up with an example, like when he uses Wikipedia and Speokeo.com to enforce and show that what they are saying has a logical reason and that it is used. The authors achieved their purpose successfully and made us reflect when finishing the text with rhetorical questions and in the paragraph before that when in a neutral position when they say “it is up to the user as to whether it is good or bad”.
“Define New Media Isn´t Easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schimid, is an article that discuss the term of new media. They state how there is not a specific definition for new media since media goes along with technology, therefore is constantly changing and it´s always developing. These changes in the media also have an impact in our everyday life.
ReplyDeleteThe authors’ claims have the purpose of inform the reader and are base on a previous research, as we can see with the source at the end of the essay and the examples given; like the Wikipedia example were they say “It is virtually impossible to search an article publish on Wikipedia without coming across a hyperlink”. Thus the article has a formal and objective tone, however it´s also giving a definition of new media seeing from different perspectives firstly they state “new media is a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills and processes that change so quickly” then “new media can be characterized by the variegate use of images, words and sound” this make the tone of the article also questioning. The context is the way media is constantly changing and the way those changes affect our surrenders.
In the text are facts and examples, hence the authors are using reason and they´re justifying each argument in the article in a solid way. They are being reasonable with the information making the persuasion technique logos.
Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid from the New Media Institute wrote the text “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” making a very curious and interesting point on what we judge as a new form of media since it has been getting bigger so quickly nowadays. They talk about how technology is developing so fast and it’s almost impossible to define what is the new media, which is complicated to do since media can show off on any format in so many different ways, and that’s because people who work with that are always trying to find new ways to connect with people and bring their attention to something.
ReplyDeleteThis text it’s really pertinent for this technological era we are living today. When trying to define a new type of media, they sound reflective in terms of their writing with the use of some question marks for example “whats is new media?”/“what isn’t new media?” and “New Media=Digital Divide?”, and to construct their ideas, the use of examples like the cell phone are essential for the reader to understand their point. This text is divided on 5 parts, being those respectively an introduction, a definition os new media, the impact on the society (for these two middle parts) and the conclusion.
Overall, the most predominant method of persuasion in the text is Logos, especially because the writers wrote their point of view and presented arguments to support it, but also we can associate a some Pathos methods on the text when the authors uses examples to support their development of the main idea of new media.
The tittle of the passage, “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy”, could already vividly convey the main theme within the context. Humans are learning almost every second, and so does the media. The media is constantly upgrading itself, breaking boundaries and connecting the world, making the world a smaller place. It is because media has already become an essential part of humans’ life. We are freed from the linear restrictions of older formats such as newspapers, books, and magazines; new media is not only the product but helps to mound the process of electronic commerce; Hyperlink makes the world one- click away, etc. In addition, “Regardless, new media and new media communications is continually evolving and as a result, its definitions evolves as well”
ReplyDeleteThe diction and word use from the passage is rather formal and informative as they are strict to the point. For instance, “New media can be characterized by the variegated use of images, words, and sounds.” The sentence gives an explicit statement about what are the components when characterizing new media. It is easily understandable through out the whole passage, as it uses the same word choice: simple yet direct. Besides, the structure is really neat, pointed out one by one and all for backing up the passage’s main theme. Thus, the passage is pretty persuasive.
I believe the author, Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber- Schmid, convince the readers mainly uses logos. The whole structure of the passage could richly illustrate the method of persuasion-- logos. Besides from having a neatly structured passage, the author starts off defining terms that readers should know before they are presented the points, supported with evidences and examples.

ReplyDelete“Defining New Media isn’t Easy” which published by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid on New Media Institute most likely describes what is new media and what could new media do for human nature. It also defies new media as a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change quickly; Also few sample way as Nesting,Hyperlinker are mentioned on
ReplyDeletethe text. And how nesting work relates to global economics, politics etc.(human social work). The end of text concludes the idea of new media from the authors which is new media’s good/bad depends on the information and communication traffic across the tech.
The text could be truly considered as a type of popularization of science. The language which has been used in the context is official and without prejudice. Each statement’s word choice is specific and accurate. The voice is non-bias.Bailey and Barbara first discusse about what is new system ’s property and also give the claim of what new media is.Later on, they show the way of New media and post “wikipedia”(data storage)as an example.Later on they talk about 2 themes of new media and conclusion. The context is a commentary rather than a literature text. As a argumentation it gives audience really specific ideas of new media.
As Logos is logical appeal or the simulation of it, and the term logic is derived from it. It is normally used to describe facts and figures that support the speaker's claims or thesis.Logos appeals on the context because of author uses large number of examples to support the statement such as nesting and hyperlinker to support the images of new media.
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Elber Schimid is about explaining what is media? They focus on special new media by defining it content, purpose, potential, and definition. It is interesting how both authors talk about how the technology is being develop too quickly and how it affect our life as a whole.
ReplyDeleteWhile writing is the authors really reflex on the term new media “What is media?” (1) and “what isn’t new media” (1). They use a lot of reference in the text to prove and support their ideas “One recent article…. opinions in the region.” (3) They construct their ideas very constructively by putting title on each different subject they were creating about. Their tone was neutral because many word in the essay just trying to inform, make use question, but not persuave use to anything particular. Their claims seems valid because they provided many example of situlations and articles to support it “Wikipedia. It is virtually…than ten hyperlinks”(3)
I think that the text is success full because they was able to deliver their message to use by using mainly ethos by providing example and logos by established their credibility through providing articles and example to prove their point.
The text “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy”, which is written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schimid on the New Media Institute, discussing what is the definition of “New media” by suggesting that the way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes changes too quickly to fully define the terms; however, one could consider the term from different degrees such as its main characteristics compared with old media like “just arrived”, or the changed format; the effect it has on society in economics politics, and the exchange of ideas, and also to look at the way how it is manipulated to bring people more capability.
ReplyDeleteThe author uses analytical and consistent tone along with simple and direct diction. For instance, the sentence “Perhaps the most interesting part of new media has to do with the restructuring of research, global economics, social interaction, and the currents of writing and dissemination of all information” is such a long sentence with connected sentence structure, simple word choice and direct meaning. Also, the statement is supported by examples or real life situation like “Wikipedia” or the French newspaper “Le Monde” to enrich the content; sometimes the use of language is vivid and interesting like, “Economically, new media is globe’s commercial skeleton”. In addition, the content is separated by subheads to clarify and organize the structure.
The author achieves the purpose by mostly using logos, which means it mainly works on the content and writing to persuade. As it provides abundant examples and makes clear and organized points which lead the audience to conclusion. Also, the Ethos plays a role in the text, as the authors add personal opinion on the topic and so they also involve their interpretation in the text and along the argument.
"Defining new media isn't Easy" addresses the nebulous definition embedded on "new" media. It suggests that, although many people may see the word, new, as straightforward term, the author takes a skeptical approach to such a view: a word new is rather cryptic. He states that prevalent new media has facilitated the means of communication; at the same time, it has fettered people's view to become provincial. However, his central query is that whether media can be classified as one absolute definition.
ReplyDeleteThe author does not necessarily take a stance, yet he rather has a impartial approach to the subject matter. He generalizes his point by stating well known factual functions of new media to try to comprehend the real definition of the term. He, also, defines some jargon to make a sophisticated remark. For instance, he defines "nesting" and Hyperlink organization" in order to enumerate the functions and methods of new media. Also, his candor inquiry entices the audiences to have actively read the text. His articulation of new media, in his conclusion, saying that " Is such subtlety of new media necessarily good thing or bad thing?" leaves us with a question of controversy whether such characteristics of new media causes threat to the society or not.
Over all, in summation, he hires logos and pathos , because he sometimes clarifies some definitions to support his argument and to lead to the logical reasoning, he still evokes our inquisitiveness to further question the suggestion that the author is presenting in his line of assertion.
The article of interpreting is “Defining New Media Isn’t easy” by Bailey Socha
ReplyDeleteThe article “Defining New Media Isn’t easy” is written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. The main point of the article is that new media is all exiting media collected together and nested. New media is evolving every second and has its own organization, it organizes everything: technology, skills, and processes. Economics, politics and exchange of ideas – these three the most essential categories for modern society are heavily affected by new media. High levels of personal experience/exposure also characterize new media. So, “don’t write or reveal anything on line that you wouldn’t want the world to know!” New media doesn’t collect information from other sources; it becomes a primary source. But, the definition of new media evolves as well as new media evolves.
Language used in this article is formal and extremely objective. As for me, I can see no bias in the text. This article is not about anything else besides of new media, no other information. The tone is strictly neutral: “Term seems to escape its definition”, “New media is an enabler and the new primary source” The structure of the text works very well for us, because authors use definitions in the article that were defined in the beginning “New media, nesting” The thoughts of authors develop gradually and clear for us, in the way that authors do not jump to the main points of the text right the way. Claims seem to be valid, because of the language used and the logical reasoning behind every claim, for example when they talk about privacy in the margins of the new media, they use logic and make a conclusion that there is not personal privacy: “Don’t write or reveal anything on line that you wouldn’t want the world know!”
Authors use logos in order to make their claims credible and valid. Logical reasoning is very clear behind each statement that they make. I think, authors achieved the purpose, because general purpose of this article was to inform us on the evolution of media and birth of new media. They informed audience by using clear logic, formal language, and objectivity. Article gives us all of the information that is needed in order to understand the new media and ways of interpreting it.
"Defining New Media Isn't Easy" is an article written by Bailey Socha and Barbare Eber-Schmid for the New Media Instititue. It is an article that seeks to define the new media. Its scope is "to name the types of changes that are a product of new media". It gives different definitions of new media, trying to expose different views and perspectives.
ReplyDeleteThis text mainly relates new media to the technological tools used in the process of creating and sharing media. It gives a first definition as "a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes". It is structured as a whole process of finding the best definition for that: it starts from giving a vague and common definition, then it analyzes the characteristics of new media. "One of the primary characteristics of new media is that it is freed from the linear restrictions of older formats such as newspapers, books, and magazines."
In further analysis, the authors examine the effects of media on global subjects such as economics, politics, and the exchange of ideas. In particular, they state that "It (new media) helps to mould the process of electronic commerce."
To sum up, the authors gave detailed interpretations of new media by giving examples and analyses of the aspects that characterize media. However, they did not give a specific answer, and, by contrast, they leave us with other questions to let us reflect and develop our own opinion towards new media.
In my opinion, new media is a very strong tool that allows us doing a lot of things quicker and easier, but if it is used in the wrong way it can result "subtle, unrestricted, and not standardized" as many people think.
In conclusion, we need to efficiently use the power of new media in order to exploit it for our purposes.

ReplyDeleteThe title of the article is "Defining New Media Isn't Easy" and its written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. This article talks about the the meaning of New Media in these days. This article states the new media as the way of organising a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just what those tools and processes are. The article is divided into five parts and each of them is carefully supported by examples from the authors to help readers understand better and clearer. In the end, they conclude that there are a good side and a bad side from the new media.
The diction, the word, and the tone that are used in this article are relatively formal and they provide many examples that can support their own ideas of new media. Then, the words of the article are pretty persuasive and the informations are strict to the point. Some of the sentences gives an explicit statement about what are the components when characterizing new media. The writers also add the tenets which can help the readers to understand the definition of media like Nesting and the others. It is easily understandable through out the whole passage, as it uses the same word choice, simple and direct.
The most method that used in the article is a logos, because it peruades using a reason in every logical claims that they mad based on the credible evidence and presented in a good order. Then, we can find that they use ethos as the method of persuasive in some of the paragraph too. Because the writers thought are clearly seen. And I think that the writers have achieved their goals because they were able to explain various definitions of what new media is.
“Defining New Media Isn’t easy” by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid is an article that discusses what is the definition of new media and what are the effects that new media brings. The article first discusses it’s difficult to determine what is new media since technology and all forms of media are evolving in an incredible rate compare to the past. It then gives the idea of new media can be characterized by the variegated use of images, word, and sounds; this is different from old media formats because of the nesting characteristics. It also gives a detailed account of how new media has affected economics, politics, and the exchange of ideas. Last the article talks about the negative sides of the new media, such as online privacy. The article is concluded with the ideas of “New media itself…. It is up to user as to whether it is good or bad” And as new media and communications evolve, its definition evolves, too.
ReplyDeleteThe context and use of language in this article is formal and direct. For example, “New media requires a non-linear interpretation…but are not always collated.” The authors explain the nesting characteristics of new media in concise and educated sentences. Also, the whole article is separated into different sections by subtitles, which is organized. By following the article’s subtitles: “New Media = Digital Divide?”, “A note on data-collection”, “Social dimensions”, and “Conclusion: rhetorical questions of potential,” readers can get a better idea of the effects that new media brings, the concerns of having new media, and the point that new media itself is not good or bad, it all depends on the users. Claims in the articles are valid since the authors discuss about new media in many ways and provide lots of information when it tries to explain or brings up a new idea. For example, when it is discussing about how new media influence economics, it gives the explanation from how commercial is different from before, how productions are now focusing on supporting new media, “Not only does this simple fact…. New media processes and communications add another dimension to the business and consumers’ practices we were already use to.”
Overall this article is persuasive and I think the authors did achieve their purposes of the idea of defining what’s new media and related subtopic. The methods used in this article are mostly logos and ethos. The thesis in this article is clear and new ideas are introduced in each subtitle section, which present the information in organized and logical orders that allow readers to understand the ideas in the article more easily. Besides logos, the authors also use concise and formal diction in the context, which is suitable for such informative essay. It also discusses new media in many different aspects; this provides a sense of reliability.
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” is the title of the text that we are going to talk about. This text was written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. This text is telling us what “New Media” is, the mediums, effects of new media on three of the most essential categories of society in the twenty-first century economics, politics and the exchange of ideas and limitless idea.
ReplyDeleteThe text is centering about the “New Media”, new media itself is a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and process that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just what those tools and processes are. For example, the IPhone 3 could be thought of as part of new media, but we can’t say that IPhone 3 is the new media again, because it is already out of date since there are many new and more developed inventions like IPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy 5. Limitless is something that is fundamental to the world of media, there is limitless possibility for communication, for innovation, and education, and those things are the ones that shaped our perceptions of new media now. Because technology now is more develop and more accessible to everyone, limitless seems possible for some people. There one term in media that is called nesting, it’s a way of organizing of the presentation of information according to subjects while paying secondary attention to context. This new organization means stands alone without a “back story” , because now in media they always the same centered story.
New media has been the profound effect on the three of the most essential categories in the society in this year, new media have effect on economics, politics, and the exchange idea. What the media do to economics are media could hypnotize people believing what the media served as long it look convincible, and it will put economics of a country going up and down. Media also often to be related to the politics, they used in a way for campaign purposes, and personal interests, for example a party used media to promote itself in order to make the party to be known by everyone and to get attention. Media also a very useful place to exchange idea, with internet we can share our thoughts or even comment someone’s statements. The author said the most interesting part of new media has to do with the restructuring of research, global economics, social interaction, and the currents of writing and dissemination of all information that have accompanied its emergence. For example web and blogging is groundbreaking because it allows people to structure and nest information into documents differently.
In media sometimes we are concern what we are writing, because we are afraid that our writing is posted or publish somewhere else, where we don’t want to. Like when you fill up your credit card number when you want to buy something online, we are afraid it’s a fraud. To dodge that problem is “don’t write or reveal anything online that you wouldn’t want the world to know!”. The term new media is more apt to describe the network of networks that overwrites traditional relationships in exchange for new ones. Traditional media itself rely on new media sources for data and information. Media allows average person to engage economic, politics, and even take action on global issues.
The text overall is talking how the new media affect the world by it’s understanding and how people perceive it by their own way. I think new media does not affect other things badly in some ways, because it help us more we ever thought. We always wanted to have something that can help us to do work so we don’t have to do the hard work. The text used pathos more because I think this text more concentrated on what the writer know about media so they rely on their credibility.
The article’s title is Defining New Media Isn’t Easy by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. The article mainly concerns about defining the new media along with its heavy influences on people’s communication, nesting characteristic and potential for the future. The first thing that the authors confirmed is that the term new media is very hard to define, as its potential is vast and will be hard to predict in the future how its definition may change. The authors also stresses strongly on the core character of the new media: how the idea of “nesting” (1) decides the power of new media. Some side notes on the disadvantage of the new media are also provided at the end of the article.
ReplyDeleteThe authors live in the era of new technologies and devices; they write about the new media as a reference of the new age. Using academic and precise language, the author define terms and ideas clearly with evidences to buttress their claims: for instance, they define new media as “ a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just what those tools and processes are.” (1)From the use of standard grammar structure and words and from the example they give about cell phones, which were thought to be new media but now only a few of their kind are, readers can see how they build up argument with valid claims and stand point. However, the use of rhetorical question makes the article’s tone sound more friendly and complaisant: “Of course, that all rests on the shoulders of the user, or does it?”(2). by asking as if they are talking to the readers, the authors evoke the readers to relate the topic to their lives and therefore set the readers to responds positively to the article. Other than that, the general tone of the paper is neutral and objective.
The combination of the use of logos, logic and argument, and pathos, appealing to the readers’ emotion, makes the articles successful in term of persuading its audiences. However, the real stress is on logos, as the author uses several of evidences from real life (Wikipedia, etc…) and constructive argument using definition such as “nesting characteristic” to convince the readers that the new media has its potential and problems. In general the authors influence the reader’s mind successfully and lead the readers thinking to a new media, which is young and constantly evolving.
The article “Defining New Media Isn´t Easy” written by Bailey and Barbara Eber-Schmid argues what new media actually is. From the first paragraph and the second last line it says “what isn´t new media?” The very definition is so broad and keeps on evolving as the technology does. Communication, education, economically and politically is some fundamental aspects that shape new media. The article also states the positive effects new media influence businesses, as for example the communication mentioned above. New media makes it easier for plain people to engage in politics, and are often up for discussion on for example blog posts or news reports.
ReplyDeleteThis article presents itself with a formal reflective tone; appropriate vocabulary is used and the author use arguments to back up all the claims with examples or definitions. This text has a clear structure of an introduction, main body and a conclusion. The article is written by the author’s personal perspective for example where it claims, “The term (new media) seems to escape its very definition” where the author uses the word seems which is an assumption of the claim.
Logos is in the majority of this article, because the author indulges in reason in every arguing claim. The structure of this article is well organized, and the authors have credible evidence for their claims. Ethos is also used in this text because there is a formal convincing tone, even though it´s not only clear facts but the author uses some credible sources to acknowledge their points. Pathos is used by examples the readers can relate to it could be the example used for the cell phone in the late 1980´s is a form of new media, most people have a phone they can relate this claim to.
The article "Defining New Media Isn't Easy" from the New Media institute by Bailey and Barbara Ebre-Schmid is mainly trying to discover what the new media is by defining keywords or empty phrases. First of all, it specifies some of its characteristics for example, not having nesting characteristic or freed from the linear restrictions of older formats such as newspapers. Then it talks about its impact on the most essential categories of society in twenty-first century like economics, politics and the exchange of ideas. For instance, the global village(political impact and exchanging idea, which has made countries closer), technologies that help the process of electronic commerce. Furthermore, it says about Hyperlink organization which is one of the definitive features of new media. And compares its citation and allusion with those of traditional reporting media like newspaper, scholarly research article, in the traditional media most part of the text depends on the structural organization of the piece. but, hyperlinks such as Wikipedia exemplify a style of information technology that is based on the interconnectedness of ideas and events.
ReplyDeleteThe text seems to be analytical about the issue of new media, the tone is neutral and questioning, the authors have their own perception but not bias, they usually ask questions about things and then discuss it, for example, “what isn’t new media”, “New media= Digital Divide?” ,and finally, there is rhetorical questions of potential as the conclusion. The tone could be also objective as they claim and then argue to persuade the audience. For instance, in the social dimensions paragraph they claim that “traditional media outlets now rely on new media sources and information”, in order to support it the use one recent article from the French newspaper “Le Monde charted”.
The technique used in the text is definitely logos because the authors use logic and arguments to convince the audience, The module that the author is trying is, questioning, claiming and arguing and they definitely do not use pathos(emotion) but there could be logos because of the citation of the author’s names and institute.
"Defining New Media isn't easy" is an article written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber- Schimid from New Media Institute. The whole content of the article is about how we define the new media and its impacts on society, including its benefits and drawbacks. It also discusses about how new media is related to certain types of medias that existed in the past.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, the context of the article is around the definition of the new media, how we perceive it in distinctive ways and how does the effect of this has been on us in terms of economic politics and the exchange of ideas. At first, the authors define it as " a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just just what those tools and processes are." The authors continue to describe its characteristic, such as the use of nesting, application to the term. For example, nesting helps to connect different information by hyperlinking. Moving on,they shifts to explain the impact of new media on economics and the exchange of ideas. They use statements and examples to emphasize its importance. " It is like the globe's commercial skeleton." In terms of the exchange of ideas, not only are political horizons widened but so too are artistic and educational ones. Its impacts are far-reaching because it enables the communications and processes. The tone is therefore really persuasive, straight and quite objective(somehow objective). For instance," perhaps the potential of new media, is a function of its intermediate development and our social, political, and economic transition within and outside of it." The tone can be seen as really straight. The structure is really clear because it falls into main categories with headlines so that the reader can easily follow up the lines. And the claims here are really valid due to the fact that he supports by real examples and statements as well as pros and cons to weigh up his conclusion.
The method that the authors manipulate is logos. They use it to persuade the reader through the use of evidence, reasoning to back up the statements. The points are well-argued and convincing. Besides, the author uses ethos. His role is clearly in the lines, especially when he considers the effects of new media on society . He gave thoughts about its impact through the use of evocative words like “deep, interesting” .Really, I think the persuasion work well because they weigh up the pros and cons as well as define what it is: It is up to us to define the digital frontier as new media is continually evolving.

ReplyDeleteThis article called "Defining New Media isn't easy" was written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schimid. The main idea of this article is about "what is new media?" and they were trying to identify the answer for that question. They mainly talk about how has the technology world has overcome the media and what it did that has made a difference to the media nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThe context inside the article is very specific and clear enough for the readers to understand the whole thing. Also, there are many examples to support all the statements that they had stated. Just by looking at paragraph 2, the first 2 lines, they had defined what is the term of "new media" and gave an example (the cellphone) to make her statements even clearer. The tone in the article is formal but also informal as well, analytical and very straight-forward. For example, on the second page, the first paragraph under the new heading "New Media = Digital Divide?" gave the audience a feeling of understanding what has the "New Media" did the the society in the twenty-first century. She then made it a bit informal by adding the sentence "Don't write or reveal anything on line that you wouldn't want the world to know!" in the next page, because they were trying to create a slight humor in this article and also a warning to everybody who is reading this article. The structure of the whole article is placed very neatly and organized very well throughout the whole article. It almost seems like there are no mistakes at all. I believe most of these claims sounds very validity thanks to the fact that they had stated so many example to prove to the readers out what their perception towards "New Media".
The author did achieve their purpose of telling critics about the "new media" and how it has effected our life by changing our lifestyle little by little everyday. The type of persuasion that the author used was mainly logo because they were both talking from their point of view about the media. However, I found that the author were trying to aiming at what would the audience feel about media, therefore there were some pathos as well. The message that the authors were trying to deliver has is very strong because they provided so many evidence and I found this article was very well-written by the two female authors.
The article from “Defining New Media Isn’t Easy” was written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eer-Schimid. In the context, the author discussed with the “real” definition of the term “new media” and other aspects that construct the modern media that we receive today.

The authors used this structure in order to have audience have a clear idea about the definition of the new media. But at the same time, the author categorized ideas with categories such as “new media = digital divide”, “Note on data-collection” and “Social dimensions”. In extent he analyzed and explored further more about the topic, such as hyperlink organization. Also, the author brings out very interesting ideas that gives us different view on new medias we are receiving today. As the author said, new media may not actually be all that new, the quality is the thing that makes research a more shaded and complex enterprise and sometimes even enriches the reader’s understanding of a given issue.
The author made a very professional analysis and exploration of the area of media. However, it is so professional that I cannot find any personal opinions or bias from the authors at all. Even though he had netural and objective attitude toward d the subject, I would also like to know the author’s personal opinion toward the topic. I believe that the author did achieve his purpose with perfect examples and neat details to explain the idea of media. Even though it is a little bit complex, as long as we spent time working and thinking about it, we will be able to understand the message he wanted us to receive eventually.
“Defining New Media Isn’t Easy”, by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid is an article talking about what is and what is not considered as new media and to what extent each thing is a new media. The authors touch several topics to answer the questions by talking about characteristics that new media is composed by and how this continues developing. New media develops fastly and this progression seems to be endless.
ReplyDeleteThe article starts by asking the question “what is new media?,” which is too broad and no exact, precise answer for it. So they asked the opposite: “what is not new media?” This might look like an easier question but none of these are easy to answer.
New Media can be characterized by the variegated use of images, words, and sounds. This is an important fact that makes the difference from the old media; the nesting characteristic is crucial for the new media because it is how the images and words are organized to appeal the audiences' attention.
The context of the article is mainly the daily use of new media today. The authors analyze in this article how, where and with what purpose it is used. The tone is neutral, not being bias and it is analytical. The text shows a clear analysis of what they think the new media is: how it is involved in our social lives such as communication to exchange ideas with other national and international people about issues all around the world, such as economics and politics. The text states that new media is the ‘globe’s commercial skeleton’; new media is the most important source to spread out information quickly globally and it is the most accurate way to success commercially.
The authors achieved their purpose by answering their initial question, although there is no complete answer for it. The information given by the authors are all supported by information that gives credibility to the authors. Logos is the method that best fits with this text; all the text is giving information about new media with examples that supports their statements. The authors summarize the article going back to the first questions in the introduction; there are new rhetorical questions that are based on the whole article as well as the question in the introduction. The questions are not answered but the text has evidence to support their ideas and opinions.

And the authors are telling us how do new media effect us and how do we use new media in the twenty-first century. The most important is that the exchange of idea and images. This is what we do the most on media on the twenty-first century.

ReplyDeleteThe article is informative, and serves to inform the reader about what new media is, and how it has affected us: "However, it is important to sketch a brief schematic life of new media in the Information Age". The author then goes on to explain about the importance of new media, what forms it comes in and how it is used in the Information Age. The writer uses a casual, somewhat neutral tone throughout the the article, (Doesn't use provocative words). In addition to that, the writer backs up the claims made by using examples as evidence (such as the Wikipedia example), and has cited a source at the end of the article. The article also forces us to think about how new media will continually evolve, and who this might affect our lives. This is evident in the conclusion where the writers makes use of rhetorical questions, engaging our thoughts.
The authors have achieved their purpose in this article, which is to inform. The effective use of ethos and logos is evident throughout the article, in which proper evidence and reasoning is explicitly stated (Again, going back to using Wikipedia as an example, and the citing of a source at the end of the article). This article was written for an organization, thus the writers' credibility appeals to the readers. ReplyDeleteThe text has a formal and scholarly language. It seems to be written as an academic article for the study of media. The authors uses a scholastic tone that continously interacts with the reader by asking rhetorical questions to what new media really is. The article has a traditional essay structure with an introduction, main paragraphs and a conclusion. The article uses similes and comparisons, as literary effects, in order to describe new media. For instance, on page 2 in the first line of the new paragraph it says: "Economically, new media is the globe's commercial skeleton". This, makes it easier for some readers to understand new media. Although many of the claims throughout the text makes sense, they are not backed up by any sources or proven facts. The article is only reflecting on new media, not investigating it.
The authors were able to give a brief overview of what new media is, what it isn't, and potential dangers of new media. The article also questioned the reader to think about new media as well, which was probably the purpose of the text. In that sense, the article achieved its purpose. In order to reach out to the readers, the article used ethos by tieing connections to known things such as Wikipedia. The article also asked rhetorical questions and drew logical conclusions out from things that were given as facts.

ReplyDeleteThe text reflects upon new media, as being a blurred and unorganized term. It’s a new creation – where people can interact with each other. It’s a categorized society where there’s place for economics, politics debates and exchange of ideas. New media is abstract and is a system that gathers information. There are both benefits and limitations by consuming new media and it may also threaten you privacy and property.
Thee article itself is enormously formal. The author has used a lot of advanced words, and it looks like a top-notch article, written by a good journalist with experience. There are several statements in the article that is based on sources. Like the mention of Wikipedia etc. Its used reasoning and several personal opinions as well as external opinions to back up your claim. The language is also very formal, who really matches with the logos theory. An article should be formal and consent. It’s not going to be read by friends or family, nevertheless maybe billionaires or doctors etc. By the author’s use of advanced vocabulary and a developed sentence structure, he really backs up his claims and I personally mean it was a page-turner and affected me.

ReplyDeleteGenerally, the article provides a broad analysis of the new media phenomenon and its effects and consequences. Tone of the author is neutral and language is formal and objective, however it has several small digressions from completely formal style: “The term “new media” seems to escape its very definition”. Article states several important point about the new media and provides clear evidence and support to it. “We need to note that new media is also characterized by an astonishing and uncharted level of personal experience/exposure”
As the article is an analysis, the main method of persuasion author uses is appealing to logos, as author provides statements and arguments to it. There is also a big role of pathos, as author often provides examples from everyday life. In my opinion, the author reached his main goal to define what can and what cannot be considered as a new media.
The article "Defining New Media isn't Easy" is written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid. The whole article is basically concluding on the consequences and effects new media has in the world today. The definition of the New Media, several jargons related to it and how can we assess it from today's view and different dimensions. Whether it has a positive or negative to our society.
ReplyDeleteIn the first paragraph of the article, the author already cited the sentence for the whole theme. "What isn't new media?" In a world that new media is becoming more and more popular, the trend of the society will put more aclivity on the new technologies. From the whole article, author's context is putting in a analysis context, in the second paragraph, author used word "a cloud of technology, skills....and processes are" to analysis the unpredictable of the evolvement of technology today. The tone of the whole text is objective and justified that it doesn't simply give one side of the New Media and in the text it just gives any personal opinion of it. In third paragraph, the sentence "which elements interact with one another....a non-linear interpretation." to show that the new media has more independence than traditional ones since it has a larger range and show that the author has a positive attitude toward it. In fact, the concept of “new media” is so broad that it is better to ask “What isn’t new media?” instead of the sooner. The best one can gets is perhaps to related media to the dubious ability of organizing and controling over an amount of knowledge. However, since the knowledge keeps devoloping themselves, there are truly no definition but to considered it something which is continuous changing and absolutely limitless. Furthermore, the concept of bulding up a message in the New media is also different, as it does not require a “back story” but all the supporting materials stand alone and oriented to the main subject. It is believed that this new form of delivering knowledge has freed itself from “the linear restrictions of older format”, and therefore becomes both profound yet easy to loose control.
All in all, the authors have clearly delivered their point of view throught the article. The new media, due to its limitless natural, does not stop “evolving” and where it goes, how to use it,…”all rests on the shoulders of the users”. Bailey and Barbara used Logos out of the 3 ways of persuation, as they applied an amount of straightforward reasoning, and somewhat Pathos as the writing related to the audience’s experience with the new media.
