1. I believe this means that everything we have close to us, and what we use as a part of our daily life, is shaping us. If media- example social media- is something you have problems with putting aside, I would say that social media has become a part of you because you have troubles with staying away from it.
ReplyDelete2. I would say that advertising in the US and in Norway is very similar. Therefore; I think the effect advertisement has on the society is alike too. As we read in the article, the companies advertise for these perfumes "Making women into objects of desire by men, and then in turn selling the women the products to help them achieve the effect". In my opinion, the advertisements are often fake, or retouch, and that can change our- mostly the children's- perception of women.
3. The climate change movement arranged parades where people could meet up and protest against how the human beings treat the world and the environment. You could find these parades in more cities around the world. The new generations is trying to make up for the last ones and how they treated the environment. "negative amputations of previous technologies", can relate to how the world has been affected by older generations, and therefore previous technologies.
4. The first question could be books are the extension of the eye. Second question:a laptop makes books such as Yellow Pages obsolete. Third question: the social media makes us able to keep in touch much easier than before. Fourth question: The gym, and being able to work out inside all year along, makes us less in touch with the nature and the different times of the year.
1."We become what we behold." What does this mean
ReplyDeleteEveryone has what they idolize for, some girls idolize those pretty business women who work in the wall street, some boys idolize those superhero who fight against villains. People always dream to become what they idolize, and it's media that create such images of characters. As teenagers grow, they find different ways to reach their idols such as plastic surgery, consuming products that make self better.
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
Most of advertising in my country China is about the discount information, at least that's what attract me. Also, some advertising is about the product that just come in the market. After watch such advertisements, consumer may grow interest about the product.
In United States, after consumers watch the advertisement, some may grow familiar with the product and this may increase the demend of the product.
If the advertisement create an ideologies, it may attract a group of consumer who hold the same deologies together as a group.
The message of the advertisement as a medium is to transmitted the information and the function of the product, to increase the demand and interest of the consumer.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
The climate change is cause by the reversal of the benefit, it is the amputations of precious technologies. This movement is the protest the human actions that are actually causing the global warming, most people are still unaware about that, they don't know what they need to change is theirself but not the envirnment. The output of the vehicles, AC, factories and many other human activities are cause of the increase of greenhouse gas which is the reversal of the benefit of industrialization.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
The creation of air-conditioner.
It extends the cool wind in environment. It obselete the old ways of cooling by using fans, ice and natrual wind. The sense of a better indoor temperature is retrived. If this technology is over extend, the green house gas would grow exponentially, which cause a large pollution in the environment.
1. Technology is a huge impact in the development of human’s lives. This situation, now, continuously happens. Technologies develop to make our life “better and more convenient”. Technology provides tools, things, machine, transportations, everything that help human… to become lazy and “immobilize”. We, human, are geniuses to create technologies and media world, we control them and benefit our world, and us but then, they control and hypnotize us. People lay too much on technology and media, people dote on the tools that they shape, that they behold and become “one” with it. For example, instead of writing letter with hands, we now have e-mail, Internet which we will use them to replace “letters with hands”. We just need to type and type, which we will do again and again and again then forever.
ReplyDelete2. A company will always try to make the best marketing plan for their products by advertising. Advertisement is just a representative picture or video of the product. Advertisement “enhance” the product in the consumer’s eye and thought even that most of the people know that the information from the advertisement are a little “spurious” or “too much”. Advertising makes consumers to buy the products. People that do not know that the advertising is “too much” will buy the product and believe the advertisement, someone that know what is advertising really for, even that he/she knows that it is not like the advertisement, she/he will buy it if in his/her opinion, thoughts that the product is worth to try. The consumer will be attract by the outer look of the product and “inner” for example the scent of a bottle of detergent. Advertising makes the product become “global”, introduce the product to everyone who is watching or sees the product. Consumers will know the brand, the name of the company of the product because it is advertised. If the ideology that the products bring back to the consumers is the same as what they have in their mind, the consumers will probably buy the products.
3. The climate change movement is caused by human action, which lead to the reversal of benefits. This is the negative amputation of previous technologies. Technologies make factories, machine which pollute the environment, the air that we breath, global warming etc. By this, the climate and temperature will change abnormally. Technologies are made to benefit us but most of the people also know but do not care, that technologies will also destroy the human ability and the environment in the near future; this is why it lead to the reversal of benefits.
4. What does the medium and technology extend?
Computer is the extension of hands and eyes.
What does it make obsolete?
Computer makes handwriting letters and research in different sources and places such as library or books, obsolete. Type e-mails, messages and sources in the Internet just need computers.
What is retrieved?
Computer retrieves the communication through an illusionary network without wasting time. It retrieves the online world.
What does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended?
If computer is over-extended, a shield of solitude and imaginary will form over us. The ability to know how the real world is like will reduce. The society will not be crowded. The personality and the ability to interact with others will not be the same. A creation of “robots can breath” begins.
1. We are the creatures, which used to adjust to a certain nitch. When we observe something new or when we admire something, we innitially become this. for example, fashion. It is just the seasonal way and types of clothing. However, people try to follow it so much to wear new collection.
ReplyDelete2. In Russia there is a big effect of the advertisement on the audience ( news, tv shows, etc.) because of the big monopoly in mass media, most of the channels broadcast mostly the same. we have very aggressive propagandas. And this monopolistic power doubts your ideology pretty much. when everybody say the same, it is hard to have different opinion. Most times media acts as a medium for the delivering information from the "top". many actors try to fight with this power, many people support them, but who knows, when will be the end...
3. Last weekend movement according to the climate change was as a voice of the washings, that previous technologies made. this is a negative amputation of the technologies.with using the technologies we have a lcm of natural resources and the emissions from the cars (ex.).
4. The iPad.
First question, the iPad can be an extension of the eye. It make obsolete the book themselves. however, we retrieved more time and complexity. But an iPad can reverse into the distraction for the humans to educate in schools) if it is over-extended.
1). I think it means that all of our dreams and goals build us up. By archiving something what we wanted for the whole life, or for particular period of time, we are «transfering» ourself into another step of life. For example, if a person works in fashion idustry, it means he/she beholds new goods everyday, so the person becomes sort of representative of what he/she does daily.
ReplyDelete2). That’s pretty tough question. Honestly, I can not think about anything material now. In my opinion, people in my country do not relly think about something material. Their minds are full of other ‘stupid’ stuff - fake patriotism is a good example as I think. I do not really know how it is in the US, it depends on individualism of every person. Well, make a conclusion in general is not right; but, seems like people are addicted to everything new. Ideaology and perception are influenced by the worldwide events and the events, twich are happening inside of the country. The message of the advertisment as a medium is to make people to belive in something.
3).The progress, that humans did, crippled the nature and global universe system.
4).I believe this is all of the sources that people can read or get information from. Let it be TV.
What does it extend?
In case of TV, it will be voice, image and feelings that we get from what we see.
What does it make obsolete?
People do not have to move anywhere to get the news. They can just take a cup of tea/coffee and turn on TV.
What is retrieved?
The sense of perception, because every person observes differently.
1- I think that it means that whatever is surrounding us has an effect on us in some way. Like when he talks about these beautiful women leave in us an opinion and creates an effect that may be of influencing us and makes us believe that that kind of women are beauty and that could influence our actions in fashion. Also that we then as we become influence we don’t have a very personal opinion of a subject as it is all influenced already, they can change you.
ReplyDelete2- I think that advertisements everywhere should be quite similar as they are all created for some purpose and that is to attract the customer. In Chile as similarly as in US the advertisements just make the consumers think that the product is the best, they give us a illusion, the perfect product. And so a lot of advertisements are made on TV so it says “call now and…” they make it look so perfect that actually a lot of people fall and do buy it. Most of them don’t really consider the cons that it will bring.
As in for the perception, it doesn’t really change the perception or ideology of something, it might get a better image for the product and make it look good and so get a better perception of the product but it will not change the ideology of advertisements as its already persuasive.
3- The climate change movement is originally created because of the pollution that technology has left while progressing in improvements and that’s why it says “negative amputations of previous technologies”. Technology come with a beneficial side but also with a amputation that we don’t really care about until it becomes a problem and major problem like it happened now with the environment.
4- Almost all the technological devises that we use everyday can be applied to these four questions. For example The television.
-What does it extend? It can extend our eyes and sometimes our brain, our opinion of something.
-What does it make obsolete? Some reading and time or willing to go outside and just go for a walk and also know the information by people, so also the contact with other people. We are stuck watching TV that we don’t want to go out, we prefer to stay watching TV.
-What is retrieve? The use of time. Sometimes we have work to do but we still go and watch TV because it gets your attention and it’s easier. It can also retrieve the concentration, makes people dumber. People just don’t read as frequently as they watch TV, and so we don’t get critical reading and we don’t get to know many facts and information.
-What does technology reverse into if it is over expanded? People just wouldn’t read, wouldn’t be much curious about things, they would get easily persuaded by others or just buy the same TV program. It would change our life in the way that we would be more lazy and easy to persuade, also we wont have our self opinion of some situation.
"We become what we behold." What does this mean?
ReplyDeleteBehold means to see or observe. We become what we behold is we become what we observe. Girls who look at advertisement want to look pretty like a model in the advertisement, that’s why plastic surgery exists. The society is moving the population the way the advertising companies are controlling the individuals. People see others around them and want to fit in— follow the trend, stay in the fashion—we become what we behold.
What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
There are tons of advertisements in Thailand, that it is getting ridiculous. Some of us want to be as trendy as Koreans or Japanese, so they tend to buy big eyes to make them look pretty according to Asians. I see a lot of advertisement online, especially on Facebook and Instagram. In Thailand, people advertise their Instagram page in celebrities’ Instagram picture, which I think was ridiculous. It is getting so out of hand. There are also a lot of lose weight products, and skin whitening products advertisement online— linked to the first question “We become what we behold.” Thai people see slim and white person as pretty, so that’s how advertisement is working on people. The effects of advertising are that people believe in the products way before they check its credibility, and people want to look like models in the advertisement.
In the US, I don’t really see a lot of advertisement as I do not watch television. What I see are normally billboard or advertisement on super bowl game. Advertising in America seems to me like something really big. They made commercials just for super bowl. The effects of advertising to consumers here are probably huge, if not then business would not put so much money into it.
The message of advertisement as a medium is persuading us to buy their products, and to think like they want us to. Mind-controlling.
"The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
“Mankind has always been fascinated and obsessed with these extensions, but too frequently we choose to ignore or minimise the amputations.” The climate change movement is the actions revealing that people are now realising the amputations of technologies. The automobile is the extension of foot. People are so used to being so comfortable with traveling by cars. They claim it takes less time and effort without considering the drawbacks such as lose of muscle strength and air quality.
Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
“What does it extend?”
Facebook is an extension of mind, eyes, voices and human in general.
“What does it make obsolete?”
It makes talking on the phone, going to play outside, communicating with a person next to you obsolete. I also decrease the ability to do homework, as well as wasting one’s time.
“What is retrieved?”
It allows people to connect easier from a distance. One could keep in touch with friends from other continents in the world.
“What does technology reverse into if it is over-extended?”
The over-extension of Facebook leads to addiction which could lead to others such as cyber-bullying, online fraud etc.
1.-I believe the quote means that we are built of the things around us, things we learn and see every day since we were born. Like the stereotypes than create a certain mentality and perception of the way we must look like to fit it thus we put our effort of being as close to the stereotype as possible.
ReplyDelete2.-Well the USA has a big influence in Mexico therefore the effect of an advertisement is really similar in both countries. An advertisement have the effect of making people buy something they don´t really need, by presenting the product in an attractive way. For instance if you are driving and suddenly you see a coca-cola ad after seeing it you might want to drink a coca cola therefore you will go a buy it even if you weren't thinking of drinking soda that day.
3.- As humanity have develop they way we produce and our transportation is created to make life easier. However those things mean we are damaging the environment having the reversal of the benefit, for example global warming. The climate change movement was for create awareness of the damage create by our comfortable an effortless lifestyle.
4.- The laptop extend our hands and our eyes, it make obsolete handwriting and the use of paper and pen unnecessary ,the laptop retrieved the sense of working faster and if is over-extended the reverse will be lazier culture.

ReplyDelete1. "We become what we behold." What does this mean?
ReplyDeleteMedia are now imperceptibly influencing our daily life; we can easily catch the messages world widely in just a second. However, some messages are peremptory—it goes over and over again through all kinds of form of media tools. This will unconsciously influence our perceptions of the message too. For example, if a country is about to go to a war with another; the government will use all kinds of form of media to spread their propaganda in order to go to the war on that country. Even the citizens’ thinks neutral at the beginning; eventually they will all turning in to the “trap” that the government set from the spread of this media message. That can be explained by people can be influence by what they see everyday even they don’t realize that.
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
The advertising in China and US has only one difference—in China the people appears on advertisement is often those people who are famous. They believe that the consumers will only buy the product if they think it’s selling or recommend by a famous people (more reliable). This is usually the comment perception for most of the people in China now; many of them will even buy the product just because they like the person on that advertisement. This also connected to the medium and delivering the message of how important the reliable of a media is.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
The climate change is cause by “the reversal of the benefit” along with the development of technologies. People are now on the top of the food chain (somehow!) and basically control the balance of the environment. However, as the technologies development, people are also causing harms on the environment. For example, the NYC as one of the biggest city in the world has a very high population compere to its size. People build skyscrapers; more and more cars are using, all these are causing the extreme weather while they don’t notice that.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
Book based films are the extension of books. It makes books obsolete. It makes our life easier for quickly knowing the overall main idea of the book. However, because the films have time limitation, so it can’t be as specific as the book—it sometimes can’t deliver the message in a right form.
1. "We become what we behold." I think we evolve around the stuff we have in our love. We admired and we become that is human nature. For example: The first human who have no light at nightfall, so they began to go back to there cave and stop being active, but when they discovered fire and have the knowledge to make fire. They became more active at night so they change their normal habit because of the thing they have to improve their life.
ReplyDelete2. The effect of advertising on my country can be seen very clearly because women when they see skin whitening product they always try to get the new one too be “effective”. They also buy ton of fat burning machines and supplement to help them get slimmer. Here in US I see a lot of people buying stuff that is on sale and cheaper than the other product because they want to spend less. I think that advertising impact something on our perception because it change or mind about something that we know that is useless. The medium of advertising is to make us thing that the produce is good and the best we can get now.
3. I think that the quotes and the climate change movement was trying to say that we should limit the use of technology because it is effecting the environment and our ideology/perception of our world. They also trying to say that technology is using up the resource that we are having right now.
4. Well, I am thinking of our computer right now. It is popular. Almost everyone have a laptop even if they don’t use much but they still want it because people said it is useful. Laptop is also the extension of the mind because we use it to access to the internet for information, it helps use know and understand better. In contrast, we use it too much. It have control us, distract us from the real world.
1.“We become what we behold”What does this mean?
ReplyDeleteHuman kind in this world always like to compare himself with others. And also, people adore others, and the nature movement is imitating.People imitate others who hold the shining part.So people always try to become someone they want.
2.What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country?
The Tesla.motors’ Ad impressed me during this summer. Tesla sells electronic motors with gasoline free. This active Ad also lets bunch of environmentalists feel excited and gives them the desire of purchasing. An awesome advertising can always cause sympathetic reaction.
Here in the US?
I watched several video advertisings of coke zero and coke diet.Coke diet focus on women buyer and coke zero focus on men. Those advertising use the different gender characteristic to satisfy consumer needs. Then those ads begin effect customers to try and follow their products.
What is the impact on ideologies/perception?
The first impact in my personal perspective is the ideology from advertising might lead people believe their belief.Another impact is those concepts might improve people’s critical thinking ability.
What is the message of the advertisement as a medium.
As a medium, advertisement could always transmit information of its’ products and ideologies. Also some of the advertisement disseminate some health and nice conception.
3.The final movement is the reversal of the benefit’’…“negative amputations of previous technologies” — relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
Technologies indeed make our life getting convenient. But also those benefits cause the problems. For example climate changes, traffic noise pollution..Those things caused by previous technologies.
4.Thin about the four question applied to media and provide an example?
1)what does the medium and technology extend?
GPS system is the extension of the way.
2)what does it make obsolete?
GPS system makes paper map obsolete.People no longer use the paper map to find the way to go. GPS system makes the route become more detailed and specific.
3)what is retrieved?
This system retrieves the detailed of the routes.
4)what does the technology reverse into if it is over extended?
If GPS system get over-extended,the route of GPS provided might be detoured.Because it’s too detailed.
1. This quote is definitely criticizing the way that people think and act. “We shape out tools and then tools shape us.” People nowadays are way too relying on the technology. And anything that we see, we read, we hear transforms what we behold.
ReplyDelete2. The whole purpose of the companies for advertising products is to get interested by the customers. However, they advertised by sensationalism and made products look awesome and cool. Customers would never know what exactly the product is before they pay. And this is what companies want from people. It is all about money, not about the advertisement of the product.
3. All the vehicles as transportation lead to the consequences of polluting, death by accident, muscle atrophy. This is the final movement that is the reversal of the benefit. A lot of issues expand from tools as well and not only extend human’s ability but also harms us. The results of negative amputations of technology reflect to the climate change. People who care about the issue rallied for the movement.
4. Really easy way to come up with an idea is smartphones. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and smartphone almost replace anything from our lives. We take notes on phones, we text and mail by phones, we read on phones, and we talk on phones, which is really TERRIFYING. This advanced technology is the combination of all kinds of previous technology, which creates a huge potential impact on our life, and it extents almost any ability that human can do, by just using it with a finger.
1. I think “We Become what we behold” means different people have different perception; Different people have different focus, eventually we learned what we focus and what we see making everyone unique.
ReplyDelete2. In my country sensationalism has appear the most in advertisement. Advertisements exaggerate the ability of their product to favor customers. For example, a toothpaste advertisement advertise its whitening ability with a black people with really white teeth to emphasize the contrast, in order to attract customer to buy its product. But the ability hasn’t been through any test to measure its ability on whitening. Sensationalism in my home country has a great impact on customers.
It wasn’t a bad impact in my opinion, to me it develop customers to be a critical thinker.
Here in the US advertisement are more ethical due to the regulations. The mass media in the US advertise objectively, but some times their bias toward either the right wing or the left wing.
Customers has to be keen on the nutrition facts and the credibility of signs, which organization stick signs on the product after testing their product and guarantee the products demanding standard. Every advertisement either advocates its idea or selling its product which all ends up to affect the society as a whole.
3. Technology has been developed through years. As technology improved, more and more skyscrapers replace the old houses in New York City. Pollution has become the biggest trouble after those “Monsters” has built.
4. light bulb
What does it extend?
In case of light bulbs it would be candles.
What does it make obsolete?
Light bulb makes candles obsolete.
What is retrieved?
Makes the brighter than it was before.
What does technology reverse into?
As light bulbs illuminate it has been used in street lamps and it affects the ecosystem.
1) "We become what we behold." --> What this quote means is that we are shaped and greatly influenced by what we own. In the same way, we become a part of what we see in the media because it gives us information that changes our perception about something or lets us know about it; therefore, it is now part of who we are. Everything we see or come in touch with in one way or another becomes part of us because it is now ours as it influenced us and stayed with us.
ReplyDelete2) In my opinion, advertising is almost the same in any part of the world thanks to many of them coming from globalized companies. Both in Mexico and the US, advertising has an effect on the people in two ways. Firstly, it makes the person want to buy the product because they see it as a need to be able to fit into society, might it be a technological device which will make them “cool”, or a product that will make them look in a way were society will accept them. Secondly, it will have an effect on the way people will socialize because certain topics will make it easer for them to fit in, for example the World Cup. Advertising will have a perspective goal. With this I mean they will try to guide the people towards what they want them to know to prove their product is the best. Here we see that they will change the people`s ideologies and perceptions towards day-a-day situations or basic needs. For example. I want to sell pineapple shampoo, so I will change the perception towards that pineapple is the best thing for hair strength and brightness. The message of the advertisement as a medium is that their product is the best and to guide people towards new society standards.
3) The great Industrial Revolution brought technologies that made life and mass production a lot easer, faster and cheaper, but brought as well contamination. Those inventions have been beaten by new technologies. Now the job is to amputate the negative things of those technologies, therefore, now we have to cut down the contamination. We should work on what past technologies left as consequences to be able to support new technologies.
4) Four Questions →
a) What does it extend? In the case of the computer it would be the hands.
b) What does it make obsolete? The computer makes the typewriter obsolete to a certain point.
c) What is retrieved? The sense of investigation and thrust of knowledge.
d) What does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended? An over-extension of computers affects the handwritten work (taken notes on paper in class)

ReplyDelete1. Human beings are the same in terms of being appealed to something. When a baby sees something that he/she has never seen before, then he/she will be curious and be attracted to it and will most probably want to explore/analyze it and get to know the objects. Grownups are not that different to babies because when we see something that we have never seen, then we will ask the person who owns the object to what it is, where they got it from, etc. Once something new becomes popular and overtime become something normal and nothing special, then that object, ideologies, etc. will become part of our everyday life. When this happens, then, instead of us owning and controlling that idea, object, etc. will control us because this is part of the society and once it becomes popular, the message of the advertisements or any other media promoting something will make us want to obtain, try or change something. Basically, what humans make become into something important and relevant in our lives.
2. The advertisements that I've seen in Mexico, are not really appealing and too exaggerated that makes the audience/consumers feel too cliché. Maybe it is effective to attract Mexicans, but from my point of view it was so cliché that some of them were hard to even look at it. In the US, I haven't seen any appealing advertisements that ever called my attention. Maybe it is because I haven't been to enough places to talk about the advertisements but in television for example, I've seen so many advertisements that I didn't understand its relationship with their main idea or that I didn't even understand their main product/objective or some of them where a little cliché. Again, this is my own point of view but it could be different to americans. Finally, Korean advertisements are really appealing and effective; the advertisements are made with recent popular, or cutting edge themes. One common thing when they make advertisements is that popular people at the time period appear and appeal more audience, where the advertisements are also made of those popular people's songs so it can be repetitive and to have the song in people's mind. This seems to be really effective because there is something called K-POP (Korean popular songs) and K-POP singers are famous in most Asia as well as in Europe and some North and South American countries. With this in mind, when a tourist comes to Korea, they are crazy for the singers and the products related to them are also popular.
Advertisement as a medium gives me the idea that it is used to communicate to other people about something relevant and attract their attention for their benefits as well as consumers' benefits.

ReplyDelete3. Humans depend on what we think that is going to benefit us and just do/make it just thinking in the present and the recent future about how "good" it will be to everyone and how much money they would make from their creation. In biology, there is something called the "Precautionary Principle" and it the idea of that principle is "better be safe than sorry." This principle was made in order to have more precaution in every single action that affects the human being, nature and basically everything this planet contains. This principle is applied for many things currently, such as the medium of transportations. It is not 100% sure that medium of transportations are affecting in the climate change but it is a factor that the scientists considered as one of the biggest reasons. Scientists are collecting data every year to see the differences and see if there is enough prove that it really affects the environment and the climate change. If it does, then the precautions taken since a long time ago could continue without problems and we would have prevented and protected as much as we could. If it doesn't, then it won't be a problem to be more free to use the medium of transportation and other technologies. Technologies as well as other things have amputations and if we decide to take the risks, then we should know how to make it less or to prevent as much as possible. The quote saying "The final movement is the reversal of the reversal of benefit" means that if we make a decision, where there are amputations that will affect us over time, then we won't be able to take anything back. As the precautionary principle says, it's "better safe than sorry."
4. Not only technology is an extension of man, also something not technological might be an extension of man. One thing that I thought was the notebooks that we use in school to take notes. Is it an extension of our brains (memory)? We usually take notes during class so we can review later and remember about the topics seen in all classes. I think that it is an extension of our brains (or memories) because we can't remember every single thing perfectly and it is useful to have things written down by ourselves so we can try to have some information in our brains. I think that photos are part the extension of men because we can't remember all our childhood and we don't even know how we were when we were babies and kids.
1- "We become what we behold." Thinking first of the broader meaning, we are extremely flexible in terms of changing tastes or ways of being. What we are is a combination of everyday life experiences with impacts and reactions. However, looking within the meaning, we really are what we behold. Dreams, aims, targets and all those small things lead is to who we are, and what are we going to do to achieve it. Looking with an intonation to media, its exactly what happened, we (humankind) behold social media so much that we are becoming part of its complications and limitations. The rules are dictating our personality and our life.
ReplyDelete2- We say that Brazilians are waking up from their eternal sleep. Media isn't influencing as much as it used to. People are questioning media more than ever. An example of it is politics, as we are approaching to the elections, the government tries to lie to us as much as they can in debates, however people go to the streets protesting about the real problems (corruption, lack of health care, lack of education, etc). We all our fighting for the same ideology, which is a better country. In US its very hard as I'm just connected with the NYC type of advertisements, so I think that in the US is a lot about either selling the idea or the actual good. America is known for their massive economy, and the government tries to make sure indirectly that people are proud of being americans, a lot about patriotism.
3- The social movement last week was an perfect example of over-extended technology the McLuhan talked about in "The Medium is the message". Humankind creates technological advances every day, the over usage of those improvements to benefit humans might turn to another way, where they need to go on the streets to create awareness of what we are making to the world. They were defending the world in a whole, the animals, ecosystems, living organisms, even themselves. The world has become over-extended, and "The final movement IS the reversal of the benefit".
4- a- The medium is an extension of man power; b- The media makes people's knowledge obsolete; c- The sense of awareness and globalization is retrieved by the media. d- An over-extended media use may have an effect on how we see ourselves and the world.
1. In my opinion, the statement means that every single one of us has something in their life that they want to achieve. Dreams and desires that people have then shape their life into a whole person that we live in now. We would then tend to suit ourselves into what we behold of.
ReplyDelete2. Advertisements in Indonesia mostly use public figure (artist) as a role model in order to attract consumers. In addition, Indonesian loves to advertise their products everywhere and anywhere. Whether it’s in facebook photos, (illegal) posters on the street or simply text advertising messages to random people. With these methods, as a customer sometime I feel like there is no credibility in most of the ads because it is all full of sensationalism.
In the US, advertisement in general seems to be well presented. I think that the effect of advertisement to the sales of some product is really immense here. Companies are willing to pay a huge amount of money just to produce one advertisement in one special occasion (ex: super bowl), because they believe that advertisement brings a huge impact to their business as people “judge” their products from how they market it to the public.
An advertisement plays a big role of someone’s perception of products. People could simply buy the goods or service if they like the advertisement. But some people also have their own ideology as even a great advertisement will not affect the way that they are thinking at all.
The message of advertisement as a medium is conveying its products and how its stand out from other product in order to attract customers.
3. The climate change movement brings a point that humans today should be aware of the “negative amputations” of advance technologies in which we are benefiting from. Problems that occur to our environment nowadays came from the feedback of what people are doing in their life. As referred from the text that human are too frequently choose to ignore or minimize the amputations after been fascinated from the extension that they have.
4. “What does it extend?” → another example of it could be Laptop as an extension of knowledge and eyes. b)“What does it make it obsolete?” → email makes letter obsolete. C) “what is retrieved?” → communication gets easier. D) “what does technology reverse into if it is over-extended?” → an over extended of social media makes people become less interactive in social way.
1. "We become what we behold." What does this mean?
ReplyDeleteI think this statement could relate to the saying “we shape our tools and then our tools shape us.” This means that the technology has so dramatic on individual that it transforms the way we speak, we act and we live. We thought that media supposed to be something we create and thus can be controlled, and yet it turns out we are the ones who are manipulated. We expose ourselves to it without carefulness, and eventually become what we once thought we were watching, or controlling.
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
Advertising always uses strategies like sensationalisms to exaggerate the benefits of the products, and convince some consumers. Back at the time of 2011, Apr, 11st when a devastating earthquake destroyed Fukushima in Japan, and caused radiation to leak; then the advertising companies spread humor that the salt can prevent the harms of radiation, and the suddenly all the salt product in Market were sold out. And I think the same situation also occupies in nations like US. If an advertising company tries to forms an ideology and lead consumers to buy certain stuff, consumers are easily jerked around since the lack of awareness and certain knowledge.
This feature of advertisement corresponded with the idea that all media message are constructed. Advertising is a kind of media, which means it’s a kind of medium to convey messages between individuals, and try to “manipulate, explore and control of the individual”.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
The climate change movement is related to those “negative amputations” that caused by previous technologies. That the overuse of technologies like air conditioners causes air pollution and changes the climates, which is the reversal of the benefit. People finally realize the problem that the technologies bring to them and start to take action against it.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
“What does it extend?”: In the case of social website, it would be eyes since it makes us easier to reach people that are away from us.
“What does it make obsolete?”: As we pay more attention to the global events or so, we might ignore the daily things around us, as we spend our time online instead of hanging out with family or friends, we might be little detached with what we should spend time on.
“What is retrieved?”: People like us, who are in international boarding school, can keep in touch with parents and friend.
“What does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended?” If the social network is extended, then people might get addicted and be easily influent by media message online and to be controlled by those constructors, and follow their messages to do whatever they want them to do.
1. This statement is about the people and the trends. Consumers buy things, from clothes to technological gadgets, passing through shoes and other accessories, based on what are the trends. Popular identities such as sing stars, actors, and VIPs in general are the models for ordinary people who just want to become like them. Everything leads to form a mass of people that buys the same stuff, wear the same clothes, and pretend to be like those popular identities.
ReplyDelete2. Nowadays, advertising is a huge business. It influences the choice of customers by persuading them to buy the most popular product instead of the most useful for their purposes. In Italy, for example, people are more likely to buy a Gucci bag, advertised by a famous model and made by a multinational company, rather than purchasing a product made by local artisans. Similarly, in the United States people are surrounded by advertisements almost everywhere, in every corner of the country. Companies invest lots of money on ads just because they know that they are determinants for the choice of customers.
This is essentially the power of advertisements: they affect our ideology and our tastes, so they actually control us.
3. Technology has developed so fast, and it carried so many benefits to people. However, it also caused climate change because of the whole business behind technology (e.g. industries, researches, electricity, resources used, etc). This is a side effect of technology, and now people try to use the same medium to change things. An example of it, is the climate change movement in New York. It spreads the message through technology to fight something caused by the technology itself.
4. Social networks extend our possibilities to stay in touch with our friends. They allow us to talk and chat with all our friends, even if they are in different corners of the world. They basically destroy any distance barriers. On the other hand, they make us staying in front of a laptop rather than going out with friends. They destroy any real social relationships because people prefer texting on Facebook instead of meeting outside.
If they are over-extended, there will be no more social lives and people will only talk to a computer screen.
1. I think what McLuhan means by " we become what we behold" is that people are influenced by what we have learned from the general public. Today, media are the main method for us to gain new information. But, the information we get from the media all have commercial purposes. Like teenagers admire their favorite basketball players. So the media corporation will usually put them into an advertisement to make more people know more about a company's products. Those information have become a major issue of our society and our cultures- people believe what they see without thinking critically.
ReplyDelete2. In my home country, some big companies ask public figures such as movie stars and famous singers to introduce their latest products on their advertisements. These advertisements could effect the public immediately because the fans of those public figures believe what they say so they usually won't think whether the products have high quality or they are really necessary to buy. People sometimes find out those products are not really necessary or the quality are not as good as what it said on the advertisement.
3. Technology brings us a lot of convenient, makes our world a better place. But the technology brings us a lot of disadvantage as well. The amputations that the technology is something that we are really hard for us to make up. For example, the cars seem bring us a lot of benefits because we can travel far away without walking for a long distances. But after the cars are owned by large population. The air pollution becomes a major issue to our environment. The climate change start to effect our life. These issues make the people start to reflect if these technologies are always good. People start to understand the how important it is to protect our environment. Just like the protesters in New York City that ask for people's attention about climate change.
4. I will use Email as an example. a.Email is an extension of eye. b.It obsolete the tradition letters. c. Email allows us to send messages faster than before. d. Today people use email to often. People start to lose their original feeling of sending a letter because it takes only a few seconds to send it. People no longer have the feeling of excitement of receiving a mail from others anymore.
1) It means that everything we like shapes us and we try to do everything to become what we like to observe. Sometimes people do not understand that they are doing this. I think it affects everyone in some ways. For example if somebody likes to watch the movies about policemen and read books about detectives one probably will go to the police academy after school to become what the one likes.
ReplyDelete2) I think that advertisement in my country has the same effect as in US because advertisements have one goal to increase the demand for their product or service. So good advertisements influence people and they are more likely to buy this product but if the advertisement is not that good or it is annoying people will not pay very close attention to this advertisement. But know there is a new thing which became popular just recently is the social advertisement, for example now our government tries to make smoking not that common in the country, so they use social advertisement about smoking. They try to convince people not to smoke any more. The message of the advertisement as the medium is to make people watch the advertisement and even if they don’t like the advertisement or product they will still know about it and may be they will change their mind later.
3) The climate change is the amputation of not just previous technologies but of all the economics and new technologies too. For example the production of electricity produces a lot of Green house gases, which contribute to the global warning. Also the amputation of previous technology is that when people complain in the internet we can’t really see or imagine how many people are against or for something, so it is impossible to change the world by signing petitions in the internet or putting a “Like” under the “Save the world” post on facebook. But movements like the recent one in New York really gives people an idea to change something or at least contributes to it.
4) Book is the extension of our eyes and imagination.
“What does it extend?”
It extends our imagination and eyes.
“What does it make obsolete?”
It started to obsolete telling stories to other people, because when people have books they don’t have to tell the story they can give it to other people to read .
“What is retrieved?”
The integrity of the stories retrieved because when people tell stories from person to person some details change and the story changes after it was told many times.
“What does the technology reverse into if it is overextended?”
If all the stories would be told through books people would forget storytelling and communication skills.
1. Todays youngest generations basically grew up with an iphad in their hands as a playing tool, we become addicted to technology. It is a part of our everyday life, we cant live without it. Technology is our way of communication, it is important for a business to succsess and be effective. Technology is our second brain thinking quicker, and more effective than we ever could, therefor we become what we behold.
ReplyDelete2. Norwegians in general is very naive, and love to try new exciting products. We are extremely affected by commercials, because Norway is a all middle class community the commercials know how to target our needs and wants, we basically consume the same on a average basis. The other claim of Norwegians is that we tend to want to use the same things; so for example many girls tend to highlight their hair blonde. Because many believe beauty can come from long blonde hair. As Mc Luan said she know that a ”long legged girl can go places” the media makes many girls want to use makeup because that their perception of beauty. I also noticed that here in the US women have the same patterns/ideology due to beauty, because media tend to young women that symbolize beauty in today’s society.
3. Today many Greenpeace fighters try to reverse the evil cycle of the negative side effect of technology. Since it takes up so much energy many tries to stop/ reduce the technologies curse. Yes technology can be the extension of your foot, but it also is the extension of the world. Meaning this, it unbalances the nature phenomenon. Its also ironic that we use technology to send a message that technology ruins our planet, however the parade in New York this weekend were marching for a simpler lifestyle without all the advanced technology.
4. What does it extend?
A sewing machine extend the hand
What does it make obsolete?
It reduce labor
What is retrieved?
Make us mass produce clothes
What does technology reverse into if over extended?
As any machine it crave energy, which lead to climate changes if over used
1. In our life of observation and perception, we always learn what is good and what is bad and try to change ourselves to become more perfect. Therefore, our characteristics is created based on many factors of surrounding environment.
ReplyDelete2. In Viet Nam, people tend to beleive what they said on the commercial; therefore, they will rightaway buy the products that is just advertised several days ago. But in America, american tends not to beleive what tey saw at that moment but considering them. The advertisement play a role as a medium to send the information to the watchers and change their perception of the world around them.
3. As the development of technology, the industry is increasingly destroying the nature; therefore, there is the climate meeting occured in New York to talk about this problem. The more we develop, the more damage we did to the environment because we neglect the environment around us and forget how is it important.
4.
a) The shoe is the extension of the foot
b) The shoe makes the foot obsolete.
c) The pleasure when we use the shoes instead of going bare feet.
d) It creates the odor from the foot and diseases.
1. Since the first day we were born, we have been observing (beholding), learning how to survive, learning how to fit in. We are never and will never be who we really are. We live in the shadow of what other people say and how other people react to certain situations, and we observe and fit in. As we grow up, we simply follow the trend line in the society. For example, girls try to fit in to the definition of beauty according to the society and thus misleading the culture of having plastic surgery and making oneself looks prettier. Same concept applies to men: the society defines what are the roles of being a successful man. We created these advertisements and high technology level, ironically, they shaped us as who we are. At the end, we become what we behold.
ReplyDelete2. I find that most of the advertisements are constructed basically the same, perhaps it’s because of globalization. They all start up drawing attentions from the audience by exaggerating and hence, misleading the whole costumer’s ideology about the product. After all, it’s just a business that hoping consumer will consume more of the company’s product.
3. We are the first generation that experiences the climate change and we are the only generation that could stop this negative effect from happening again to the world. The technology level is at its peak everyday. Technology levels never slow down increasing but these technologies bring in bad effect to the world as people rely on them so much.
4.
(a) “What does it extend?” – the whole internet is like a huge brain online and even more efficient
(b) “What does it make obsolete?” – it makes the interaction between human become weird: speaking with one and other become awkward without using a media.
(c) “What is retrieved?” – the world has become a smaller place as everything seems much more convenient. (Not just hearing voice but can also seeing the other person from the other side of the Earth)
(d) “What does technology reverse into if it is over-extended?” – addiction to the technology.
1) "We become what we behold"
ReplyDeleteNowadays every teenager has an image of "ideal" himself/herself based on the characteristics that media creates for "ideal people". So, if media creates idealistic profile of how we should look and behave, then we try to be like this profile, like movie stars, super heroes, etc. We become what we behold.
2) In Russia all advertisement is either goods and services, or social projects (anti-smoking advertisements, anti-drugs, etc). So, 60% of advertisement has one goal - increase the demand for product or build customer base for a new product. 40% - social advertisement in order to make population aware of problems in the country and their solutions, this advertisement unites the Nation. In US I saw only advertisements of particular goods, that people can buy by the cellphone. Advertisement can change ideologies and perceptions, as in case of changed ideology of some women about how they should look in order to be successful. The message of the advertisement as a medium is to make people watch advertisement anyway.
3) "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City. The final movement - climate change in the New York showed how nature reacts on the progressing technologies and developing world. The negative amputations of the technologies can mean that as our technologies progressing we forget how to care about the nature, because as the extension of us - technologies replaced nature and we forgot about it. All modern technologies make us do not think about nature, because this extension (technology) gives us everything that nature can give us. But, we underestimate the strength of the nature in comparison to our technologies.
4) Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
Calculator
1st: Calculator extends our possibilities of fast manipulation by numerical data. 2nd: It makes obsolete hard mind work. 3rd: Education goes faster, as people do not spend time on calculating different values. 4th: over-extension: people will want to learn how to use their skills to calculate everything.
1. "We become what we behold." What does this mean?
ReplyDeleteHuman invented media to help ourselves in our daily life. However, as we rely on media, it turns out that media is guiding or directing us. In the past, people use to buy newspaper to read but now, with Internet, people can search news much easier or with Google Translate, people use dictionary less frequently. These examples show how our daily life is 'affected' by media so from human's invention to
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
People in my home country prefer to listen to products that have "America" or some developed countries certificate. They also like the products that are famous in America or at least are America brand. They think that products from those countries are better than products are made in Vietnam. However, this does not affect all products, it depends on the field of purpose. This ideology happened a long time ago, during the war time when Vietnam got supplied by the Soviet, China, Japan, USA. The USA armies brought products from their country to Vietnam and Vietnamese people got a chance to use them and they like them. This ideology has a huge impact on the following generation. Instead of using "Made in Vietnam" products, they use "Made in America" or "Made in Japan" products. The advertiser of these products can gain a large profit each year.
In US, I think advertising has a great effect on consumer. For example, with advertisement of how useful and stylist the iPhone is, people just rush to Apple Store and buy them. I see that American people prefer to listen or see the advertisement of the products that is well-known or appear on the market for long time ago.
I personally see the message of advertising as a marketing tool to increase the revenue of the company.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
The technologies that people invented are causing bad effect to the climate, like the Earth is getting warmer. From the purpose of helping our human life, make it easier and more effective, we, human, eventually harm the environment around us.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
What does it (the medium or technology) extend?
iPhone is an extension of communicating, hands, eyes.
What does it make obsolete?
With iPhone, people no longer need to write letter, wired phone, camera or even books. With an iPhone, people can call each other easily, take pictures, send email, play games, watch movies, listen to music. iPhone is like an "all-in-one" product. It make lots of previous technologies obsolete.
What is retrieved?
iPhone helps us to retrieve time. We no longer need to spend time to dial number, to write letter or to wait in line to buy movie tickets; instead, we can do those thing on iPhone which save our time to do other things.
What does technology reverse into if it is over-extended?
If iPhone is over-extended, it can cause many problems. People will rely on it too much, use it all the time, ignore the world and just pay attention to iPhone every time. If iPhone is overrated, people will think that it is a tool to show their richness or style.
1) " We become what we behold" . It basically means as mankind, we, at a certain time, have certain fetish for things that we are fond of. We idolise them and try to gratify our desire by becoming like them. Some examples include pop stars, actors etc. We are being easily controlled by media as the patterns are changing so rapidly.
ReplyDelete2)What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
Well, in Vietnam, the advertising using celebrities always have a considerable effect on people. The techniques that marketer use , in most circumstance, easily control the majority of consumers whose patterns are externally affected. They try to follow the trend such as getting whitened or getting surgery on noses, eyes and chins so that they can be as refulgent as Korean stars. The advertisings which are from foreign companies are often more attempting than those which are from domestic companies.
In the US, i think the effect is undoubtedly enormous, as a lot of giants prepare to pay a prodigious sum of money to advertise their products. Some who have the same interests and demands may become interested in the products of the advertisings.
If the advertising has an ideology, it attracts who have the same ones and causes curiosities from people.
The message of the advertisement as a medium is to inform people about products and persuade them to buy using techniques.
3."The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies"
The climate change is certainly caused by an increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The victims and culprits are at the same time mankind. The protest movement is against the human action. The technological improvements both improve and worsen mankind. Really, it is the pernicious harm( an amputation of previous technologies) that human have to incur.
Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!
One example is the laptop. It would be another hand. It makes old desktop obsolete. It retrieves the mobility by which we can go everywhere with laptop. If it was over-extended, it would make people torpid and lethargic and make them cling to it all days.
1. I believe this means that the information and influences we contain and consume eventually become what we think. Our opinion on things and on life.
ReplyDelete2.The first thing I have noticed in my home country which coincidently i have also noticed here in the USA, is that the message of advertising as a medium is always constructed to look beneficial to the buyer, at whatever cost it may hold. For example put the word "only" before every price, not mattering how much, and giving the possibility to parcel the prices so that it looks like the consumer won't be spending as much, when they will actually be spending more because of the "interest" that is always included. The effect of such a propaganda is that it convinces the consumers in their subconscious that this will actually benefit them, and so obviously, they head out to the store and purchase the advertised product. The perception this brings to the consumer is that they have the best, most modern product, and that gives them "status". Until they release a newer, more modern model. And then the cycle begins all over again.
3.This relates to the march held in NYC this past weekend, because the march promoted the message that our species, the humans, are destroying our earth. This "reverses the benefit", because we believe we are benefiting from our endless exploration of the earths resources, until we realize that this is what actually is "ending" us, or better, we are destroying ourselves, in a process witch we first believe is beneficial to us, until it's not anymore. And when we realize this it's almost always too late.
4. Facebook. What does it make obsolete? Social face-to-face interaction. You can indicate any sort of interest in someone or something by simply liking their page, their picture. It prevents you from actually having to walk up to the person and express yourself towards them.
What does it extend? It extends to what we see, hear, what we are interested in, who we relate ourselves too, etc.
What is retrieved? The facility of communicating to others. In one second you can get a message to someone.
What does technology reverse into if it is over-extended? In this case, it reverses to the lack of actual and physical interaction with someone else, it can make people more socially awkward by addicting them to this technology making them believe it's their only way of expression and communication with others.
1. We become what we behold.” means that each one decides what it wants to be because of the influences around us, and that is why the media has such an impact on everyone, since it has the power to define and spread the information of what is trending and what people should do/be/buy to be socially accepted which leads to a sense of happiness.
ReplyDelete2. I think that when you compare advertisement between the US and Brazil they can look very similar since Brazilians are so influenced by the idea of the “American Way of Life”, and because people that works with Media knows that, they use it on their favour and try to get as much from the US as possible. They air on television american movies and TV shows, open famous american restaurants and stores, and that built the main ideology that everyone always prefers the imported products, because it transmits a good economic status. The message of the advertisement as a medium is the crave they create to seem like the person needs to have the newest product on the market or other will judge you as old fashioned.
3. The phenomenon of climate change is mainly humans fault because of the technology that developed in a way that did not take in to consideration the environment and only now we can see that problems like this can actually happen and be a major conflict on human lives.
4. The computer is an extension of the body. It’s an extension of the body because you still need a brain to function it . You can create almost everything in it, from long essays to beautiful images. What it makes obsolete is our physicals skills to write and paint. What is retrieved is the easiness and less time-consuming. The computer can reverse to a loss of basic physical skills turning them slowly on lost abilities.
1. "We become what we behold."
ReplyDeleteI think it means we are influenced and shaped by what’s around us or what we see everyday. Behold means to observe, to look at. We tend to become, or at least try to become what we usually see. For example, our aesthetic value has changed drastically. Nowadays, people, especially women, usually view being thin equals to beautiful because almost all of the advertisement or female celebrities are thin. Media has a great influence on our perception and it is the source that we use to get information everyday, thus people start to be shaped or limited by what we see, read, or listen everyday through media.
2. In Taiwan, as well as in the US, the advertisements make people to buy the products from a certain company not because of the company’s product has the best quality, but because the company is the most famous and attractive one. The advertisements have influenced consumers’ values or priorities they should consider when they are going to make a decision. People sometimes purchase things they don’t need; they buy it just because they want to look cool or fashionable, this phenomenon is especially common among teenagers. For example, people don’t really need to change their phones unless it’s broken or really old, but every time when Apple release the new iPhone, people will buy it because everyone’s buying it. Just like other forms of media, advertisement is created in order to give out certain message, which is usually to persuade people that something is the best, someone should be elected, etc. The message of advertisement itself is to convince people to have the same idea toward certain products or people.
3. The climate change movement that just took place during the weekend in New York City was to gather people and to protest against how humans had been treating the environment has led to a severe consequence. The abnormal climate change is the “reversal of the benefit” and “negative amputations of previous technologies”. All kinds of technology, such as air conditioner, TV, cars, etc., have lead to the climate change because of the pollution and waste they have produced. Technologies have brought us an incredibly convenient life than we ever had, but people should also be aware that technologies have also done a great deal of damage not only to us, but also to the planet that we live.
4. i. What does the medium or technology extend?
Smartphones extend our perceptions by providing any kind of information, entertainment, and communication; it is an extension of our senses.
ii. What does it make obsolete?
We rely on smartphones so much that we lose our ability to figure out other ways or skills that we can use to reach same goal without smartphones. Smartphones have made our lives more convenient but also paralyze and limit us in many ways.
iii. What is retrieved?
I don’t think smartphones have retrieved anything; they just make everything to be done more quickly and conveniently.
iv. What does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended?
Addiction. Too many people rely on smartphones so much that it could be described as an addiction. We are so dependent on our phones to do everything that if we lose our phones we get so anxious and lost. We are limited by smartphones since we stop thinking about other ways that can be used to reach the same goal.
1. “We become what we behold”
ReplyDeleteI believe this statements means, what we have been through, experienced, and near us are things that will shape us into a person we are now. Therefore we have to be careful on what we chose and what we do, if took a wrong turn once then it will be hard for us to go back.
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
The effects of advertisement to consumers depends on how they perceive the advertisement itself, since everyone have different perspective we will have different perception about how see things, for example: when I see soap or shampoo advertisement I will skip the advertisement because for me it’s something that is unnecessary to be advertise in TV, and when I see advertisement for sporting goods, I will look at it at maybe attract to buy the products. The message of advertisement is to attract consumer to buy the product and send a hidden message for the viewers to make in more appealing, because people tend to look hard when they don’t know.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City
Everything have their pros and cons like technologies could help the human live with inventions that make humans life easier that it was in the past. Technologies help people to reach world they never touch before. In other hand technologies also could destroy our world and bring chaos, for example: propaganda that happen in this world can turn human turn to each other and war technologies use to defend the country now being used to attack other country, and some technologies can hurt world like car that emits CO2 that ruin the atmosphere.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example
Pencil and pen would be the medium we use to share our though, pen and pencil make chalk or rock obsolete to use as a medium to write. The sense of sharing knowledge to each other, People will just write what they want to say and reduce the conversation to each other.
1. Breaking the statement word by word, it basically says that we become what we desire to be. In relation to media, I think this statement emphasizes the huge impact media can make on our idols, which - according to the statement by McLuhan - forms us.
ReplyDelete2. I do not believe that advertising in Norway is as intense as in the US. Norwegian consumers are very price conscious and frugal, and so advertisements do not have as strong effects on them. In the US, considering what McLuhan says about women being under influence of "advertising geniuses", I do not think this applies that much anymore. It was probably a thing in the 1960s when the advertisers could use the distinct gender roles to their advantage. Now, commercials are more gender-neutral. However, the advertisements still try to implement desires and ideals into our minds by using success symbols (usually celebrities). The message of the advertisements is to change our perceptions and ideals.
3. The statement relates to the climate change movement in which that they consider all the technologies that were supposedly full of benefits, which now serve "reverse" the benefits we wanted from the technology, at the cost of the environment. We develop technology in order to live better, but ignore the negative amputations of them. In this way, we are in some cases worse off.
4. One could see the Kindle - or reading tablet - as an extension of the book. It is slightly faster and more effective to read on (as you can get definitions by just pressing a word), but makes our ability to check the dictionary, or even search for the word online, slightly obsolete. The sense of relationship with a book is slightly retrived with the Kindle, as the Kindle is not just one book, but rather many books in one. With a normal book one would have the physical book, which could be meaningful to some. It could possible reverse the whole need for physical books. Eventually, we could all end up with electronic books - that however, could be good for the environment.
ReplyDelete1. "We become what we behold." What does this mean?
I heard belief that everything starts with our thoughts. So, if you behold in something it is first step to achieve you aim. Furtemore, in context of media, people want to get something not because of their thoughts. They can just see car, mobile phone, excellent basketball player on TV and become with an idea to buy this car or to start training to be also good basketball player.
2. What are some of the effects of advertising on consumers that you have noticed in your home country? Here in the US? What is the impact on ideologies/perception? What is the message of the advertisement as a medium?
Russian and American advertising is almost the same. Generally, advertising makes people wanting to buy some product. There are differrent ways to attract people. Some companies advertise some discounts, another ones make image of product so people start to want it. The most popular medium is TV. The reason is TV gives consumer a lot of information in short time because you see product with your eyes.
3. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit"..."negative amputations of previous technologies" -- relate this to the climate change movement that just rallied over the weekend in New York City.
Nowadays, technologies become ambivalent in relation to their impact on the world. Generally, technologies make our lives easier and more comfortable. However, they have negative influence on our everyday life. For example pollutions. The increased level of CO2 started to be serious problem. In result the average temperature all over the world risen. If this consequence continues to increase the glaciers can be melt and see level will be higher. So some cities can be under the water.
4. Think about the "Four Questions Applied to Media" and provide an example (other than the car and the phone!).
A lot of modern technological devises can be used for those questions for example TV.
What does it extend?
TV can extend ways through which get information. The content of TV can influence on people’s opinion, thoughts. Literaly, it extends our eyes. When can things that happen even on another continent.
What does it make obsolete?
TV makes obsolete reading, newspapers. Generally, it can obsolete all others way of getting information. The reason is TV is most easiest and understandable source of getting information. Furtemore, we start to less communicate with people. Even at home family can sit behind the TV and don’t speak about their life.
What is retrieve?
For sure it retrieves a lot of time. It can also become a bad habit. People start to watch TV in the evening just because they do it everyday. They watch TV without purpose. People just sit behind TV and watch everything that it shows. They become lazy and insignificant.
1) To me, the word "behold" could either means "beyond" or "beware". There are good and bad sides of everything and in life we have to be that way. No matter how many good things we will do in life, there will always be the bad side effects of it as well. And for social media, what it mean is it can bring both useful news or useless news.
ReplyDelete2) - In most of my Vietnamese advertising, I found that they would always looks better than it seems to be. Especially, they always use really good looking boys or girls to advertise those things. Also, I found it to be too overly exaggerated which make it sounds cheesy sometimes. However, it is very attractive because of the beat, background music and all of those effects they put inside an advertisement to make it looks better and more eye-catching.
- I actually think that almost everywhere in the world would do that, however, I found advertisements in US advertise products that actually works better than it seems. Also, I found that US advertisements for some brands they would make that advertisement repeat the same thing almost all the time but they just make it a bit funnier every single advertisement, which is a good thing because they are trying to make the customers remember that specific advertisement is for that type of product. For example: Geico.
-I believe that the message they are trying to create on advertisement as a medium is making people believe in that popular person who is holding that product in his/her hand is a good product but is it actually that good? Even though some people do know that it's phony but because of curiosity they still want to try that product.
3) - Climate always changes over days and nights, and even changes a lot over a year. This is just like the media as well, because media can't stay the same everyday, if it does, it will bored the viewers and nobody likes it like that, just like what if it's spring throughout the whole year in New York. That will be boring to many other people who likes summer, fall or winter. Therefore, media has to change fast and quick like the weather to catch the viewer's attention.
4) What does it extend?
- Credit cards are an extend of cash
What does it make obsolete?
- It is harder to manage money that is being used everyday.
What does it retrieved?
- It is much easier to just carry a card and credit cards can be use almost anywhere
What does technology reverse into if over extended?
- Addicted to shopping or using the credit cards without stopping.
1." We become what we behold" means that we have the tendency to imitate what we observe around us. McLuhan points out that propensity from the early mid 20 century when television had not fully developed: we do what we see. For instance, the first thing that a infant does is to mimic what the older do as a basic skill to survive. This inclination does not change over our lifespan: we buy what we saw on advertise, we dress like celebrities we see in the movie, we act characters in movies and books. This process of imitation does not happen with the present of our consciousness; it happens spontaneously without our notices. And hence, we gradually become similar to what are round us.
ReplyDelete2. There are many kinds of advertisement here in the US as well as in my home country. Each of them was made to be the most attractive, regardless of the level of ridiculousness, offensiveness, or keenness, in order to attract consumer. The advertises crate a path of new marketing, people start trying to buy what they see on TV, even if they do not really intend to do so. Advertisement alters the way people think along with their decisions: one might just by a new pair of sneakers one sees on the internet even though one has had enough sneakers to wear at home. Advertises tell their audience to improve people lives by buying their products, but what also hidden behind the advertises are companies' deceiving enterprises.
3. Climate changes are the reversal consequences of industrial revolution of human kind. As technologies and science advanced, our life become more comfortable. The advancement is the extension of human intelligent, however, our intelligent also have amputations: the overuse of sources and the products aftermath of industry production. Plastic bags, for instance, considered the most intelligent invention in human history, is now a major problems for the globe's environment. The bags kill animals, and even more, they do not decay until thousand of decays.
4. Writing, for example, is the extension of our memorizing process. It allows us to preserve our knowledge on paper, but make the practice of memorizing less prevalence, and oral passing knowledge tradition also becomes less practical. The eagerness of studying is retrieved by the practice of writing since it is more effective. However, it will eventually reverse back to practice of learning through memorizing, since overuse of writing practice.
1. “We become what we behold” means (in my point of view) that everything we consume shapes us, and forms/creates our identity. Children (1-6 years), for instance – there all acting different and they sort of have their own sayings and actions. They like action figures, Pokémon, Barbie etc. It forms their identity and personality - the reason for the effect and the creation of personality is due to media in general. What we consumed of media, we become.
ReplyDelete2. The advertising industry in the US as a whole is very similar to Norway ‘s advertising industry. As you may know, the Advertising firms, marketing department etc. usually does a full marketing analyze to fulfill consumers/customers needs and wants (desires etc.) I personally mean that an American commercial would work fine in Norway, because of the very similar consumer/costumer nature. As read in the article, certain perfumes (as advertised) on the women body will effects men’s desires and may or even fulfill men’s desires. I personally mean this is a very exaggerated product. People really believe in this, and it sort of makes the world go unreal and fake. On the other hand there may be commercials that has a realistic point of view, so its important to use your analytical skills to the best of your ability.
3. The leading source for climate change is human activity. Due to the reason that we cut trees, build fabrics and so on. By developing technology we may be able to reduce pollution. However technology is the main reason for pollution due to the fact of more efficiency and that technology as a whole contributes to the shrink of resources on planet earth.
“What does it extent”?
Microsoft word is the extension of the hand/s with the pen and paper.
“What does it make obsolete”?
Efficiency increased dramatically.
“What is retrieved”?
More efficiency at offices, firms, sending emails and a huge contribution to education whereby students can be more efficient and consume information way more speedier.
“What does technology reverse into if it is over-extended”?
To much efficiency, the human population may overheat and get overwhelmed – procrastinate etc.
1. When we see someone using a new phone, suddenly we have a demand to buy it. When an artist wear a brand new clothes, all of the people want to wear the same clothes as their favorite artist. And it will be happen again if there is something new has came out. Why? Thats because we always want to have and want to be something that we see from our family, environment, and media. All of the thing that we saw will influences our perception and the way our thinking which we can not control it.
ReplyDelete2. The reason for the advertisement is always to make the consumer buy or use the good or service that the seller provide. And sometimes, some of the seller just want to make for themselves and they dant care about the consumer happiness. That is waht always happen in my home country. The people just always want to but something even though they dont really need it such as a new phone, a cola, a car, and many more.
3. The technology is just to solve the problem feom yesterday not tomorrow. If there is a new technology available in the community, it will just make the problem looks different. People think that the using of phone or tablet will decrease s the using of paper or will save the forest life. But actually to make a phone it will cost more than a paper. There is always a brand new phone come out every six months, and the advertisement makes the people buy it eventhough they already had a phone or a tablet. After that, the people will just throw away their old phone and will make a tons of garbage of old phone. Then the factory of phone will use a lot of natural resources to make a phone and pollutes the environment.
4. House
What does it extend?
In case of house it would be a cave
What does it make obsolete?
The house makes cave obsolete
What is retrieved?
Makes our home more comfortable and looks better than it was. Then, it will cost a lot of land and money.
1. As it is conveyed through out the McLuhan passage, he believes that media, nowadays, strongly influence people 's life styles and values. The example that he illustrates is the impact that social media marketing has brought to youngsters. He even states it as advertisement bombardments, as if it is a belligerent attack. To some extent, considering the proliferating of advertisement of current society, his assertion can not be misleading. Thus, people ought to follow the convention that media convey, which leads us to become what we behold.
ReplyDelete2. In my country, because plastic surgery became so common place in celebrity culture, many people tend to follow that trend. It is open to debate that such surgery is malignant; nonetheless, I believe that if it gets too common place, it may annihilate the uniqueness of individuals.Because advertisement in Korea tend to possess the showy nature of celebrity's beauty, it, sometimes, even the advertisement that are not to advertise the surgery, increases the desire for the surgery.
3. On last Sunday, there was a climate change rally. Such movement was to foster the greater action for the global warming, and economic weakening. It can be suggested that some of those causes were brought by technologies and some reversal of the benefit that people didn't expect.
4.
What does it extend?
It tend to extend the life form of humans
What does it make obsolete?
Some technologies become obsolete, for instance of regular phone, by another technology. Therefore, it can cause the greater gap between generations
What is retrieved?
Community in which people communicate in everyday life.
What does the technology reverse int if it is over extended?
It can destroy the nature.
1.I think that the quote means that as we become more dependent the thing we created (like media) ourselves, then we cannot live without it, and eventually they controlled us with the illusion that we think we control the thing we created.
ReplyDelete2. 2.The advertisment in Taiwan focused more on discounts or other things make customer feel benefited when they purchase the product. However, I think in the United STates, the advertismenets were somehow more creative: They use they creativeness to attract the customer's attention, then they somehow become familiar to the product, eventually they think that they have the demand to buy it.
3. 3. Human's technology and industry brought benefit to our society, however, it also harmed our enviornment and caused climate change during the process while we are trying to make our lives easier by technology. Interestingly, the climate change movement in NYC is actually a reversal to the benefit that we gain from industriliazation today. But by doing this, we can also make more people become aware of the problems in our world and make more to take action, not just choose to ignore the fact that can destroy us all.
4. 4. The creation of stoves: It replaced the old way that we have to take woods and spend lots of time making the fire without having the ability to control it. The creation made human's life easier, but at the same time the chemical substance it produced can cause harm to the society.
1) In the possession of a technological material or any addictive substance will shape us into becoming what we are now. We change to the idea of a given object and use it to detriment our health or benefit it. The behold of a item is what transforms us to be what we are.
ReplyDelete2) Advertisement is a tool that changes the way to perceive the world as it is. We simply become easily persuaded into following a trend. The advertisement shows us what other views like about the people and what they would expect out from you. Peer pressures is what makes one transform.
3) Technology is an extension of man. The way we use it is a detrimental thing to our lives and the earth itself. Amputation ourselves for social events by sitting and watching news and others, we cause a chain of reaction that puts us all in the same position to rely on technology. The negative amputations of technology is the reliability to have a overall view of a situation than to have many individual views in which will create conflict.
4) A laptop is a what we rely on. The makes everything easily as social networking, documents and others. It has made it so easy for us to used. However the radiation emitting from the laptop endangers the life of us all.
1. “We become what we behold”, According to McLuhan’s ideas, technologies are dominating our daily life exponentially, and almost every technology is considered as a medium because it extends us, These technologies are all around us and we are dealing with them At any moment. Weather we want or not we have to follow and become part of those things we have perceived from media.
ReplyDelete2. Advertising which is a part of the mass communication is a crucial thing for every society, but it is sometimes considered bad or good, for example advertising in order to develop economy through businesses developments, which is a good thing. In my country(Iran) these advertisements are all constructed, government wants people to believe certain things, some are affected by these advertisement, But there are other consumers who do not believe their media and advertisements because of opposition media and their different ideologies, and in this case, media literacy is needed to help us. And I think there is a same thing here in US but the messages of media here in the USA are not ambiguous, it means all media are united.
3. Although, we know technologies are extending man and the human body, there is a bad side for all existing technologies, for example, increasing the pollution and global warming, which we saw one of its effect over the weekend in NYC.
4. 1.What does technology reverse into if it is over extended? There is no doubt about the advantages of technology(media) and all of man’s extension through that, but when it comes to the over extension, it has the effect of imputing, for example, “the time we spend alone in our cars isolated from other humans, or the fact that the resulting amputations from automobiles have made us more obese and generally less healthy”(technology as extensions of human body) 2. What does it make obsolete? when technology makes something obsolete, makes it not applied. For example when technology gives us this opportunity to communicate with others from far distances, face to face communication will die. 3. What is retrieved? We can be refreshed and find the sense of beauty, for example, using all the chatting technologies to communicate with friends. 4. What does it extends? It extends man, human body, microscope extends our eyes, gloves extend our hands.
1-I think that the things we learn it become part of us like when I use social media or a read a book it become a part of me I learn about it and that makes everything you learn a part of you.
ReplyDelete2-I thing advertisement is the almost the same in the US than in Spain because for example when they advertise about film is almost the same. advertisement is sometimes annoying because when are watching a video the sometimes put advertisement and it interrupt you. but the companies do it becuase the can sell more products.
3-I believe that the quote about the climate change movement was trying to say that we should limit the use of cars and factories because it is effecting the environment and our perception of the world. They also trying to say that technology is using up the resource that we are having right now
4-Book based films are the extension of books. It makes books obsolete. It makes our life easier for quickly knowing the overall main idea of the book. However, because the films have time limitation, so it can’t be as specific as the book—it sometimes can’t deliver the message in a right form.
1. When people watch all the media programs, they may all choose to follow such a role model. A role model is actually the way for the advertisers to attract people's attention and try to follow the lead of society so may not be "antique". So actually when we think we like an actor or actress, it is always contrary that they made us like them, which is what I think as "we become what we behold."
ReplyDelete2. If we just simply speak about the affection that advertisement made, the whole world should be same, everyday tons of people got "deceived" by the advertisements and buy stuffs that they don’t even know real or fake. But the worst thing is that when people just get used to the cover up by the advertisements, sometimes people may lack the perception of keeping the truth. So nowadays many companies start to create fake advertisements just to attract the customer and customer always has to pay for that. For the medium, advertisement more like a special program that could get people's attention from those formal news or basketball games to another pausing time.
3. The climate change could be thought as one of the worst results from extension of technology, when we want to enjoy a more convenient life we have to pay something back which would be nature's health. So for people, the amputation from technology is the decreasing of more natural life.
4. Actually, if we use today as an example, the Apple phone is an extension of those small normal phones that can only send texts and make calls. The Apple phone is trying to extend the functions of the mobile phones to let it able to contain more and more functions such as surfing, gaming, watching videos, and mapping.
.
1. "We become what we behold. Allow me to talk about first impression. The first time you meet someone is the time you have much impression on that person. If that person make a good impression, you will think that he or she is a good person. So if a kid, he was born in a family that have a tendency to violation, that kid will be vulnerable and weak in his early life, which later he may act like his parents. We behold, we see what is going around us. We have influenced by our surrounding, especially society and family. Ok let say that you was born in a family that you parents are communist. You can't change anything about that. Every day, you listen to what they say, how good the communist is. Then it will shape your perspective, you will think that this policy is good, being unable to absorb other perception. You see, what we observe today are important to transform ourselves to better people.
ReplyDelete2. In Vietnam, people usually advertise their products are better than competitors product. For instant, Tide products often advertise on the TV that their product are much better than Ariel, a local detergent company. They erase the logo, and do an experiment that show Tide products are more friendly and efficient. The advertisement plays an important role that not only to promote its products but also to be a propaganda in order to harm the competitor. In American, I like most of the advertisement, except the McDonald one, because it fabricate that eating McDonald is a happiness. Different advertisements will have different message, whether trying to convey people to buy company product, trying to harm competitor, or even conveying people to act for important things (saving the environment, helping the charity,...)
3. The invention of technology is to enhance our living conditions. Our life is beneficial by many technological advance, such as phone, car, internet. But it has a drawback. People use technology that affect directly into our planet, cause green house effect, global warming. Oil in Mexican gulf incident has cause a big problem to US underwater ecosystem till today.
4. Voice is something that important in our way of communication. We want to hear the voice from different countries, different perspectives. In fact, sometimes voice do change our perception, maybe in a negative
1. All we see influences us leaving a certain impact on our personalities. And the more we see something, the easier we accept it. For example, top stars and sportsmen usually become a role model for the teenagers because they often see them on TV, magazines and online. In this case what teenagers see becomes sometimes even a sufficient part of their lives.
ReplyDelete2. In my country advertisements rarely get much attention from broad public, but generally they make and atmosphere of “premium” brand on some of the products. I think In US the effect is generally similar. The message of advertisements as a medium is to convince somebody to buy a certain particular product.
3. The more a certain technology is used, the higher is the damage it eventually causes. This is what is happening now with the transportation system. Huge amounts of exhaust fumes cause a greenhouse effect that lead to climate change. Or at least it is what they claim to be happening.
4. Example of Internet. It extends our ability to communicate. It makes obsolete telegraph, stationary telephone and in some ways ordinary mail. With internet we retrieve ability to reach any required information in small amount of time. Overextension of the internet reverse real-life communication
1. "We become what we behold". Everybody must have heard of the phrase "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". It's similar in this case I believe, as they both refer to the concept of personal standard in perceiving the surrounding world. Our belief, our taste, our style,...those are the things that we behold, and they filter the information we receive, and then give us an expression on each subject or event. Then, it becomes really ambiguous that whether we control our belief, or they control us on the other hand. One way or another, I firmly believe the statement provided is credible, since the way one looks at the world truly reflex who he or she is.
ReplyDelete2. Advertising perhaps is the oldest trick in the business book of how to make customers want to buy your product. Without advertising, the public would most likely never know about the product. In my home country, it seems to me that a large amount of customers decision is driven by advertisement, and that's due to the fact that when the quality are relatively the same, who is more well-known should have certain advantage. Same here in the US. Look at how many advertising campaign Nike or Coca had. And for sure they are gaining great profit from such creative ways of bringing the products as close as possible to the consumers. By influencing personal perception, the firms make the audience see what they want them to see.
3. Technologies, despite the positive affects on our societies, are bringing such hindrances to our environment. Technologies bring factories, convinience, employments, but they also take away forest, rivers,... However, the most important thing is that technologies are not to blame in this phenomenon. It is the people, being ignorance on their own actions, are destroying their environment. Technologies are simply benefits seeking tools for some people, and therefore in order to stop this dreadful action, everyone has to let go of their own good for the sake of the whole society. "The final movement is the reversal of the benefit", that’s when people ignore the amount of money they should have made and act for common good of the others
4. An example: the Google glasses:
- What does it extend? It would be the sight, the way one observes the world
- What does it make obsolete? It can makes the process of researching upon a certain subject is unecessary
- What is it retrieved? The sense of having a large source of knowledge right on one’s nose, the sense of knowing in advance compare to others
- What does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended? A trend of looking at the world through datas, 0 and 1, perhaps it may affects humans’ basic instinct of intuition.
1 - McLuhan used to think that we become what we contemplate. For instance, if we admire the television for some reason, we are going to become a part of it. And actually this is the concept that brings us to the media world, for instance, people start participating on social media because they love it, and then they begin a process in which they start making part of it. You live what you behold.
ReplyDelete2- Brazilians get really affected by pretty woman and hot man as well as soccer and other sports. For that reason, the commercials (especially the ones involving beers and cars) use those topics in order to make people buy the products. In the US I usually see people working with patterns and famous artists in order to get people to buy the products. I could perceive that both Brazil and US have a capitalistic ideology, in which people always want to buy more and more.
The medium is the message and that is a fact. This message can contain a set of ideologies that can work with the population's brains. For instance, during the dictatorship we had in Brazil, the advertisements always glorified the army and said how good they were (since the army was ruling Brazil). Also, if people give the credibility to a medium, it is going to become powerful. That is happening with the climate change in New York. The medium gave some emphasis on that and now people are much more interested in that.
4- The example can be game boys. In the past, we could only play games on it. Nowadays, you can chat and find new friends, as well as play with them. The game boy now connect to the internet too; therefore, you can even access facebook via it. The improvement of game boy made the product an extended part of some os us too.
1. Basically, I think that means people are likely to follow they see and want to become the same, for example when a person saw somebody is wearing a really nice jacket, that he/ she love it so much, that person might then be thinking buying the same jacket. This always happen in society with media, when people saw advertisements or commercial that attract them, like famous stars, they want to became the same.
ReplyDelete2. Usually, what consumers perceive from the advertisements will directly influence their interests on that specific product or service. Mostly from the first sight, for example when a person saw the new iPhone 6 was on the commercial, and which he think it look really bad, he might not buy it. However, there are so many method of advertising, one of the most popular one is using celebrities, consumer are likely to follow the trend and buy the product that the celebrity is advertising on commercial.
3. When people over used technology an effect that opposite to the original aim might be occur. For example, media was aim to make people communication more convenient, however when people abuse on it, they might rely on phone and technology all the time. Applying this to the situation of the climate change movement, I think it's just the same thing, because of industry factories and all the chemical stuff that people suppose to built for making better life has actually an effect to the earth which cause global waring.
4.
1.What does the media or the technology extent?
Knowledge, Internet is the extension of brain.
2. What does it make obsolete?
It made traditions/writing obsolete, no more people write letters.
3. What is retrieved?
It retrieved people' minds, media sometimes help people get out of bad things, such as anti-drugs commercial.
4. What does the technology reverse into if it over-extent?
When people abuse in mobile/ texting people lost real connection, from each others. When people rely on technology so much, they can lost ability in actioning.
1- “We become what we behold”. This sentence was used by McLuhan to demonstrate how media can control us. At some point, the human beings will become part of the things they love they contemplate. For example, if you contemplate the new technology, you will start to use it and become a part of it. Becoming a part of it means that it will affect and impact our lives and we are going to be really influenced by media. So, it is very important to be critical and behold only what is going to be good for us.
ReplyDelete2- In Indonesia people are influenced by commercials that show beautiful people. Therefore, our advertisements are mostly based on beautiful women and men, as well as famous people, showing products. These techniques help the companies to sell the products easily. In USA I see quite the same. It seems that famous and beautiful people sell products everywhere. These advertisements reflect the capitalism that both countries follow. Actually I think that in all over the world are pretty much use the same techniques, but at some point they focus on what is popular in the country itself.
3- Medium can affect us very easily and that is why medium is the message. The ideologies contained in the media can influence many people. For example, if the biggest medium of a country has a tendency to support a politician, it is possible that the politician wins the elections. And the reason why that happens is that the media have the power to affect people’s thoughts, influencing them. Therefore, that medium is going to gain credibility and become even more powerful. The news about climate change in New York is not that different. The media talked about it in a way that people got more interested in the topic and now are worrying more about.
4- One example can be calculators. I remember that my first calculator can only add and subtract numbers, and nowadays we could even connect them to the Internet. You can also create a graph and install games on it. We don’t calculate anything by hand anymore, we just use the calculator and it is done. The calculator now is an extension of human that we cannot live without it, especially in math class.
1.We become what we behold” refers to the things that surround us such as people, technology, experience etc… will shape the way a person behave or is, we behold different experience through life or influence, e.g. beauty advertisement, girls want to look like model or famous people because everyday technology give the message go the “perfect beauty” and some girls become the followers of what they see.
ReplyDelete2.The advertisement in Mexico is usually funny and entertaining what influence consumer to look the advertisement instead of ignored it.
