Marshall McLuhan asserts that all media is an "extension of man" in the same way that the wheel is an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye, and clothing is an extension of the skin. What exactly does this mean? Get philosophical.
Well,I agree that all media is and 'extension of man'. We always choose what to read and what to listen to. Sometime by looking at someone's preference list of book or newspapers, we can say what type of person he/she is. For example, there are two types of newspapers: 'dogs' and 'cats'. The 'dogs' supports government and agree with every step, the 'cats' does not agree and does not support. So, by saying from what group person is, we can get an idea what his/her interests are. Music, movies, clothes and etc are 'extension of man'. Can you imagine a naked person? What would you think? Not much, right? Only, that a person is pretty weird. Now, imagine if you meet a person who does not have any social networking account. What will you say about him/her? I do not mean you will mock him/her. I mean it is much harder to say something without knowing what that person likes and what she/he follows. Especially, when you can not talk to him/her face to face. Media identifies who we are perfectly. But it does not mean we should be controlled and crazy about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marshall McLuhan about media as an extension. Extension is used to enlarge something; like "wheel and foot", "book and eye". Media is also an extension, it helps us to enlarge our ability to get access to knowledge, information as well as being able to connect to each others. In the past, people have different types of media, like newspapers, letters but nowadays, those old medias have transformed to medium, which is a combination of medias. For example, Internet, it has many functions. People can search Internet for information, use Internet to call people, send emails. I personally think that Internet, as a type of media, is becoming more and more than just an extension of our mankind but not just Internet, other medias also are and will be our extension in the future.
ReplyDelete“All media is an extension of man […] the wheel is an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye, and clothing is an extension of the skin.”
ReplyDelete“Extension” means to expand, to open wide something, to spread something or to be a supporting role. An extension of man is an expansion of knowledge. Media provides understanding, knowledge, information, facts and many things that people know, may know or do not know, by that people will open their mind to a wider range of thinking. The wheel is an extension of the foot means that wheel give support for the foot, wheel is considered as another additional feet.
When we read a book, we use eyes to read, scan and evaluate the information, the details of the book; therefore book is an extension of the eye. The more we read the more our eyes “extend” which means to expand the knowledge “through the eyes” to a new level.
Clothing is to cover our body. It is consider as our second skin. This is why clothing is an extension of the skin. The first skin is WITH US, the second skin is to cover, protect and support the first one ☺ .
What McLuhan is trying to say, in my opinion, is that we all depend on some type of medium to live; this is because we are surrounded at every moment by media messages. Maybe the extension is not direct or easily seen but it exists. For example, “the wheel is an extension of the foot”. The foot and the wheel are not together directly but what the foot does, influences in one way or another what the wheel does. Same way the media is an extension of man because it makes us think, react, and talk differently and, is sometimes the reason we do something. More specifically in the media sense, what he is trying to say is that we don’t get that influenced by the message as by the type of media we see. In conclusion, we have an extension with media because it orients our mind towards what they want us to think, and we are connected by an invisible string to media.
ReplyDelete“Extension” literally means “An act or instance of extending”. However, in here “Extension” means something else. First, use a minute to think about the human evolutionary history. A majority of the people argue that the most important reason for human beings to be evolve and grow technology until today is because human beings’ natural desire—we question ourselves in order to make our life quality. That is how the word “Extension” means in here—a better and quality way to live for life. People need to express and communicate with others better so they developed the media; People need to go faster and easier so they developed the wheel. Just because of this ways of aggressive, people could evolve differs from others.
ReplyDeleteI think what Marshall McLuhan means when he says that "all media is an extension of man", is that everything about the media adds to us; to our personality, and to the way others see us. For example, social media influences what music we should listen to, what clothes we should wear, the places we should go... They advertise this as the things that make us look "cool', and make us feel like acting and being this way will make society accept us. So, naturally it becomes something everyone wants. I believe that nowadays, we believe that if we don't show the world what we did last weekend, with whom we did it, and where we did it, it's as if we didn't do it. A picture on Facebook/Instagram is there as a way of "advertising" ourselves as social and outgoing people. Like Marshall McLuhan says, we are only becoming more and more narcissistic, and this is the extension that social media has brought to todays generation.

DeleteGood point! I totally agree with you when you said people have the need to show everyone what they are doing and how happy they are with their lives, and some people may say that they don't do it, but everyone does it without even noticing it.
Delete"All media is an "extension of man"" - media creates an extension of the man, sometimes completely falls and untruthful. Just an "image" of the person in the social networks, a creature, made with only one purpose - to show yourself. "Look at my profile picture, i had a vacation on the Bali", "look at my tweeter, I have very thoughtfull tweets", "Look at me...", "Look at me...", "Look at me...". you try to show to the people the person which down not exists, however, it is created by you, so it is your "dreams", your extension. And it is truly sad to see all those "created covers to impress", who can tell you a lie, and you will never know, if it is a lie, or not, because you haven't seen the face of the person, when he typed you a message.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it sad to live with imaginary people?
Media itself has shape us in a very weird way. Attention is what draws the society into taking sides. Media can be dangerous in terms of delivering messages and information. It's possible to blame the media but we ourselves can't understand and different-shade the "content" and "structure" which affects us.
DeleteI think that Mcluhan meant that we depend on media a lot, even if he didn't know that we would nowadays depend that much on media. For example, the wheel is an extension of the feet; they work pretty much the same, they both are used to travel, move. The wheel would be the media and the feet would be us. It is an extension of the human as we create them to do something we need or want, but after a while we need then too much; as the mobile phone now, it's kinda an extension of our hand because of how dependent we are of them, specially the teenagers, including me.
ReplyDeleteUltimately i think that his purpose was to make us realize that we were becoming depending on media and that we should try to avoid that.
How do you think we can avoid it? Media is everywhere.
DeleteI agree with Marchall McLuhan, "media is the extension of a man" and not only for surrounding us but also because is already part of us. Everyday we see ads, we are in our computers, in our cellphones, reading from different sources, watching movies and the list can go and keep going. I personally can't imagine a world without media or without been inform. If we lost media we'll not be able to communicate we´ll became useless, that´s why adapting to not have it in our lives will be almost impossible hence it will be losing part of our identity as humans. All in all media is in fact a extension of a man, and is part of who we are.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the idea that media is definitely apart of us. As much as we want to detach ourselves from the influence of media, it is nearly impossible to do so. Even if we did destroy media, how can we base our knowledge of the surrounding in the world. It is an extension and we should be sad on how it is so attach to us. The fact that we need to rely on it.
DeleteIn my opinion I think McLuhan want to tell us that media is a tool that can help man to do something, like we use wheel to in our extension to move faster than our feet, or book the can be our extension of eye cause from book we see things in our brain like we are imagining. Media is a tool for to interact with other indirectly, as you can see internet is one greatest media ever, we can explore the easier with internet. Nowadays, media is an important thing in our life because it is already become part of us like what McLuhan said. Man can be fragile because of media, even though we think media is an extension to man doesn't mean that it can't hurt man either. Extension itself means a part that combine to something to enlarge, therefore media is extension of a man means, media can make a man bigger by knowledge. By knowing what is out there can make us be ahead from everybody and giving us advantages from those who are not familiar with the outer world.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that the extension of man is the media. Relating to his medium effect, it does play a role by the characteristic of which affects the society. The content is not to be entirely blame for, as we interpret it differently. Again the media is a tool in which shapes us by our own way of viewing it.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of media is to extend our knowledge on the surroundings of the society. If you look at it properly, the content does not affect the influential part. It the characteristic of the media, also known as "structure" of media. The way it is arranged and organized affects how we perceive it. Again, Mcluhan states that its the characteristic that affects us and not the content.
All media is an "extension of man" simply highlights the fact that we are basically give the tools and knowledge on how we view and build our believes on it but as to how we built our own building and view of the whole idea it entirely up to ourself.
McLuhan refers to media as an "extension of man". We define extension as complement of an original matter, for instance, on the figurative level, " the book is an extension of the eyes". Giving the definition, how media complement ourselves is still convoluted. A man does not simply live, but he also thinks and has the ability to influences others; media give a man the power to do so: the power to "mediate our communication" and "affect how we perceive and understand the world around us". The man also is influenced by media : media provides a lot of perspectives that shape our sense and behavior. We are extended, connected to the environment and to society by media.
ReplyDeleteWhat Marshall McLuhan mentioned about the wheel, the eye, and the clothing is that these innovations created by human allows people can do what they are able to do in the same way and at the same time extent to further and broader ways of human ability. However, through these median as a key of receiving messages from human's perception, people are more likely and easily seeing only the outside as a surface of the message, recognizing only the most obvious part from our new innovation of the media. And what is dangerous about the media is all the messages, people should be able to look beyond the obvious part and look for the non-obvious and extension of the change of the new messages. Thus, Identify changes is the main goal for people to understanding beyond the covert of media.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marshal McLuhan’s point that media is the “extension of man”. For example clothes change the way we look. Clothes give us a chance to show our identity, to dress in our personal way. Clothes shape us and we shape our clothes too. Books help us to get a new knowledge, books are the extension of our eye because they give us a chance to “see” the things maybe we will never see in our lives. And media is an extension of the man, because we create the media as we create books and we create clothes. Media messages do not appear by themselves, people create them. For example if I want to share how I feel, I will write a blog or update my status in the social networks and maybe some people will share and they will understand what I feel. So it already becomes my extension. The same way governments can convince people to believe them. And also some people can share their knowledge to let other people learn from it. There for media is the extension of the man.

ReplyDelete"Extension" means that the extra part of an object that may help that objects to achieve its own function. I agree with Marshall McLuhan when he states "Media is the extension of man", he means that media now shroud over almost everything aspects of the society. Therefore, we can use and control media as a tool to take information, assessing the world around us and so on. I think that this kind of idea represents the innovation of human when we always try to create more things to make our life easier, like the wheel is created based on the idea of the human foot. Therefore, the media is created based on the needs of the human to inform, to gather and to communicate with other people.
ReplyDeleteWhen Marshall McLuhan says that Media is an "extension of man", he means that it is something the man created to help the man. Without the Media, the man would only see his surroundings and learn things that are told to him, and it would stop it there, therefore, it would be something like the old ages where what you see is what there is and what you hear is everything you learn. The Media gives us the opportunity to have access to all kinds of knowledge and the possibility to see a place on the other side of the world just by one click. In my opinion, that's the point of Marshall McLuhan saying Media is an "extension of man", it's simply just handing the power of knowing everything he wants to.
ReplyDeleteAll these examples exemplify one of the characteristics of media presented in the article, which is media “add itself to the existing, amplifying existing processes”, and “shaping them in a new technical form.” As wheel to the foot, book to the eye, and clothing to the skin, media develops the existing way of communication, and helps man to transmit or convey idea in a new technical way, which is “an extension” of human thoughts to the world; however, it also has counterforce, as media would re-shape, affect or even control over individuals or societies in a way that human are not even realized. For instance, at first clothing was just for covering or decorating our bodies, and yet now it might have become a symbol or identity of status in some case; Ironically, people’s mind is getting controlled by the things they think they have power over. To avoid that, human need to be detached from the force, and to aware that it is not the content of media effects society but merely the presence of it. As we discussed before, all media message are build, which imposes the values, bias or perceptions of those constructors to those receivers. Once we are aware of this invisible property, we are less likely to be effected by media.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Marshall McLuhan's opinion about media. Media a source of gaining knowledge for human beings. Media is not just a book or a TV news, media is everything that helps us found out something new. Extension means make something bigger, greater. In this case "Extension of a man" means that media helps people to enrich their mind, gain new knowledge and think critically. However, people should be aware of how media can influence them in a bad way. People now trust media without any doubts, but you never know if the source of the information is valid and if you should trust it or not.
ReplyDeleteBy asserting media into our daily life, we may receive messages much more convenient than before, just like the book is an extension of the eye, books allow the readers to see the world that they never experienced before, the media is an extension of man, it allow the receive to interact with it, it provide humorous information for the receivers, it create a world full of innovative things which attract the receiver. The media create a society. This draws me to the movie the Matrix, in this movie, everyone in the world is controlled and connect by the media system, every sense of feeling is fake. As the development of media, some day maybe information can directly go through our brain without using of any of visible machines and mediums, it will become to part of our organs, and we cant live with out them.
ReplyDeleteMarshall McLuhan asserts that all media is an "extension of man".
ReplyDeleteThis definition of media is unusual: it directly connects media with humans. It's an interesting point of view because it considers media part of the people.
Media has been created, improved and utilized by people. This continuous reliability on it makes it a fundamental part of our lives.
And here it comes the definition of "extension of man". It means that we use it at the same rate we use our body, our hands, and our feet. We use media to communicate with others, to keep us update about everything, to share our feelings and emotions, and for so many other purposes.
To sum up, we use media as frequent as we use any parts of our body and it inevitably makes an "extension" of us.
One of the most intriguing fact about Mcluhan's assertion is that people's perception depends on media. He also adds that the way it is interpreted or what effect it gives to individuals depend on the viewers. His stance in the media is somewhat appreciative, while he still emphasizes the need of caution. However, in my personal view, because content of media that forms the information or bias is also made by people, people who are getting affected or being "self extended" is, in fact, due to people who are disseminating the information in media. Therefore, my view is that such study of media that McLuhan endorses can benefit the society in numerous aspects.
ReplyDeleteI think that McLuhan mean by extension of our self is because if we don't have media we feel incomplete or alienated. It is also that we interact with media daily on our life that we can't go with out it for an hours. In real life, people bring their phone with them every where even if they don't really need it. It is the feeling of fake security that media have provide us and me fell naked with out it on us. I think to cut that fake security off us is to try everyday to left something electronical at home.
ReplyDeleteIt is certainly true that media is the extension of the man. Indeed, what he means is that people continuously rely on the media. Extension is the addition of something. Some of the prominent examples include Internet, television. The development of the Internet allows people to gain knowledge, information etc. Its impact on human are prodigious. It helps us in everyday lives. Medium, such as Internet, can shape and re-shape how we think and perceive the world. It is hard to imagine how we may live without its existence (our extension).
ReplyDeleteIt is similar to the fact that the wheel buttresses the foot, so it is considered as an extension of foot which strengthens it. Just like clothing protects and beautifies our skins, it is an indispensable part of our skins. Besides, books provide us with information and knowledge, thereby influencing how we see and understand the world.
Really, the impact of media is getting more and more prodigious and we can't seem to live without it. Anyway, it ameliorates our perception of the world in the way that even McLuhan could not even imagine.
I think what Marchall McLuhan refers to in the "extension of man" is related to our appetite for drama. We want to get told what to think, what to do - or at least, what is "normal" to think and what is normal to do. The media "extends" the norms and culture that we inherently search for, and makes them more available to us. What he means is that media is nothing more than a tool that makes our search for our collective beliefs and culture more easy in the same way as the wheel makes transporation more easy. In the same way, a book makes it easier to recall our what we see with our eyes (by writing down what we see in a book) and clothing effectively covers our skin providing it both protection and warmth. Thus, media is a result of our desire to be part of somethig, and makes it easier to have a common groundwork among other people.

ReplyDelete"Marshall McLuhan asserts that all media is an "extension of man" in the same way that the wheel is an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye, and clothing is an extension of the skin. What exactly does this mean? Get philosophical."
ReplyDeleteOk, now, getting philosophical…
As we know, in the ancient times people lived in very small groups and they had a leader, who was the only person to keep their shared knowledge and decide what is true and what is not. Throughout the centuries humanity evolved and small groups with only one leader became villages with councils of elders - keepers of shared knowledge of the community. Thus, people always had a need in some storage of their shared knowledge. As humanity evolved further, these "storages" were getting bigger and bigger… People needed to be able to store tons of shared knowledge and be able to access it easily, we invented TV, radios, wrote books, manuscripts... Then we created different dimension to our reality - Internet. Internet is infinite storage device that can store world's shared knowledge and unite everybody. Humanity has access to this storage, now we are all one community with common shared knowledge. Personal knowledge is our own knowledge, knowledge is a man, shared knowledge is the extension of personal knowledge - thus, this is an extension of a man. Nearly all shared knowledge is stored in the media can be accessed by the most part of population of our world. Then, media is the extension of a man, even without quotation marks.
Lora Kim (Jeong Ah)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marshall McLuhan because as the examples of "wheel is an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye, and clothing is an extension of the skin," media is another part of ourselves. Media is everywhere and we use it most of the day, even in school reading articles, watching presentations and videos, reading books, use computers and cellphones and more. This has become so common and normal that we don't even notice it much and many people actually forget that newspapers, books, etc. are part of media. When people are asked about media, the first thing that will come up to their mind will be something technological, such as computers, cellphones, radio, television, etc. Over time, media is getting even more "part of ourselves" that the future generations will not be able to imagine a life without these media.
I think the reason that Marshall McLuhan thinks all media is an extension of man is because no matter what content the media publishes by which kind of mean, it’s all created by us. Media is just a mean that help us to spread and publish our creation, knowledge, and opinion more quickly and more easily for others to have access to it. McLuhan has emphasized “Each media ‘adds itself on to what we already are’”.
ReplyDeleteFor him, all technologies that mediate our communication is considered as media, and he thinks the forms or structures affect how we perceive and understand the world around us, which is like how we humans use our senses to understand the world. We use media as extension to express ourselves and receive information from others.
In this information Age,People are getting closer but also farther away from each other.”all media is an extension of man”, In my consideration Media is gorgeous but also evil.Media does make human kind’s life turns to a different place. It reinforced the value of human nature and also beef up the devil of human nature. In Marshall McLuhan’s words “extension of man”,extension could be either in positive or negative part of man. As I mentioned above when media emphasizes the value of man, the man’s wisdom might be present to others; When media enhances the devil of man,the man’s lust and dark might also be in others’ eyes. That’s how media works for human kind, just like the wheel is an extension of foot, but when the wheel goes over speed it might cause an accident. Also like the book is an extension of eye, however when the wrong book pollutes the eye,it would also pollutes the spirit of a man.Double sides of the extension human should envisage both of them.
ReplyDelete"..media is an "extension of man" in the same way that the wheel is an extension of the foot..". In my opinion what he means by this is that media has become a part of who we are, the same way the wheel changed the world. Everything that man does, revolves around media. It has come to the point that we cannot even leave our phones alone, constantly checking it every minute. Media has become such an 'extension' that we allow it to run our lives, being more narcissistic (Instagram, Facebook) in the process. Media has embedded itself in our daily lives, just like the wheel. Just imagine a world without the wheel, that is what it'll be like without media.
ReplyDeleteIn Mcluhn's view, Medium has a social effect on societies, they are all extending our lives,in other world, all of these technologies and stuffs that enable us to extend ourselves are media. Even he has considered light bulb as a medium as it creates spaces during nighttime. What's more, media goes beyond the contents, media are not important because of the contents, for instance, "the impact of newspaper is not the news it represents, but, the fact that there is news to share because news paper makes it possible"(Mcluhan says). Although, I agree with his opinion, I think he has ignored the content of medium a lot.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, what Marshall McLuhan intends by "all media is an extension of man" is that today media has really helped us to do lots of things and somehow become a partner in our life. Media is just part of our daily life that we all use it as an addition to many things. The development of technology allows us to extend our knowledge. As an example, it is allied to the certainty of how books help our eyes to "look" more, clothes to personalize our skin, and wheels to guide our foot. As media become more and more affiliated to us, we are now living in a world where people can not be detached from it.
ReplyDeleteMedia is a reflection of humans needs in order to communicate. It did and it does have a purpose, as the book was created to be read, the media was created to connect us in all forms, as a speech, a text, radio, television and internet (within the social media), and the Marshall McLuhan's saying reflects also how we extend ourselves through it, and not just as a creating, but as our own tools to help and destroy us. Media was created by humans, so if we really think on the fact that we are affected negatively by our own extension and creations, we are exposed all the time against our own "machinery"
ReplyDeleteWhile I was reading the comments above, I couldn't agree more with Gwendolyn Cheung. "In Marshall McLuhan’s words “extension of man”,extension could be either in positive or negative part of man...When media enhances the devil of man,the man’s lust and dark might also be in others’ eyes. That’s how media works for human kind, just like the wheel is an extension of foot.." He expressed exactly what the extension of man is about, how the media reflect us and we are also a reflection of it.
You started with such an engaging sentence! I kept reading just because of it! Loved it <3
DeleteWhen talking about "extension", I would think of making something longer, bigger, something more… To apply into this situation, I think what McLuhan want to point out here is how media has develop the life of a man, how it has make the life of a man the way it is today. Just like wheel is an asset that help the car to move, media is an asset that help to build a man's knowledge, understand better and just like filling in the gaps that are still remained unknown to every man. I agree with what McLuhan said and I think that it's very true. If there is no media today, I could't think of how I can be who I am today because us human tend to learn better from what we can see and hear, especially to things that we've never heard before. Therefore, media is a tool to helps us learn as much as we can from it, both the good side and the bad side of it.
ReplyDelete"The wheel is an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye". Normally, the most direct meaning of the word "extension" is perhaps something that you can physically touch and serves a particular purposes in your daily life. However, in this case, I understand, for example, "book" is a tool to help a person widen his or her mind. It helps the individual to "open" their eyes, achieve a new perspective of the world. The media is just as similar. In the context I understand "media" includes every methods of communication, and for sure communication is one of the most important part of our social lives. For instant, says you are extremely talented in certain fields, and your personality is as beautiful as a piece of art. Nevertheless if you are unable to express yourself in some ways, nobody would know and you will never be recognized. On the other hand, as our world is developing rapidly, the media also helps keeping us on the same page with others, and universalize our world. Therefore, “an extension of man” is indeed a accurate and excellent phrase to describe the media.
ReplyDeleteAn extension is defined to be "a part that is added to something to enlarge or prolong it; a continuation"(Google). With that being said media does seem to be like an extension of man. Media exists as us, where we do not. Our opinions on a newspaper, our impression/expressions on a movie, our updates on the news to the more obvious ones; our existence in society on social media such as Facebook, Twitter etc. The more instances we look at the more that we realize media is present in all the everyday aspects of life. We have become so accustomed to media being a puppet master of a backseat driver that Mcluhan thought it would be appropriate to call it an extension to our very existence. It is intriguing to consider how this vast entity is an extension to you and me.
ReplyDeleteMcLuhan looked into a deeper meaning of media which the general public doesn't do. His idea makes reflect the true meaning of media
DeleteWhen talking about media as extension of your body, it is when the media becomes a part of you and you're dependent on it. Every human being is depending on their feet when they're walking, and some human beings feel the same way about media. Like many people say that clothing is an extension of the skin, it is not something the body needs, or something that naturally was meant to be on the body- but it is something the human beings have become dependent on- and we can't work socially without it. This is something we can relate back to media- it's not something we were naturally meant to use- at least not this big amount- but it is something humans have developed into being dependent on. We are so used to have media all around us that it is going to be simply impossible to live without for a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Victoria's point of view that media is something we developed into being dependent on. Somehow we become controlled by the thing we create when we become dependent and cannot live without them any more.
DeleteExtension literally means that " a part that is added to something to enlarge or prolong it." Rather than the tool that carries information, Mcluhan sees media as the extension of human: a tool that add and shape who we are today. People today do not have the leisrue to apply critical thinking and have patience with all the information any more: they choose to receive the information they want to see and ignore the things that they are not interested in. From the message an individual likes or follows, we can easily understand "who he/she is" somehow. But with such convenient tool, we seem to lost our patience to spend time understanding a person somehow. If suddenly we do not have social media anymore, we might feel akward with understanding a person in another way, such as eye contact, sense perception... because we get used to receive information in a blink of an eye. From the quotes mentioned above, those tools become extensions of what we already have because we want to make our lives easier by extending. Eventually, media become the extension of ourselves, a tool that we create ourselves but also shape and influence us all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe message I got out of Marshall McLuhan is that almost everything around us are media and they are used for all short of reasons but the gist is to some how contacting with each other more easily. There are way too many things we would like to know and learn through the media. However, that's just not the only definition from McLuhan's point of view: all media are created by men, they are created just so that they are the “extension of man”, they have an impact on each and everyone on the planet. Human’s abilities are unlimited yet time is limited for human to fulfill what he/ she wanted to finish while he/ she is still alive. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Therefore, media become the “extension of man” and help the next generation to fulfill what the old generation left them with.
ReplyDeleteMedia is a way to present ourselves. It also becomes an unique language to let us learn the changes from the past.
DeleteMcLuhan has a very interesting perspective of media. We always care about what is the message or the meaning that the media is trying to tell us. We all believe that is the main reason why media exists- to give messages and information to people. Yet, McLuhan doesn't think that way. He thinks that the meaning of the message only creates physical effect on society. He believes the awareness of change is the most important. I think the most interesting part of his perception is that he believes that media are not just a way to communicate, he believes media are languages with their own unique system. His perception of media really surprises me.
ReplyDeleteTo Marshall McLuhan media means anything that affects the society in either positive way or negative way. Extension of man to means any invention that reinforce human power or any invention that has a great impact on humans. Give “A wheel is an extension of foot” as an example. This quote refers to the developing of technology that affect most of the society in the modern world. In the ancient people travel by foot; modern people travel by cars or even planes. All to all, as wheel invented it stimulates globalization and also ruin the barrier between continents.
ReplyDeleteMarshall McLuhan literally tells us that media is huge and due to the fact that it is huge we can dive into media and develop our knowledge. Marshall really expresses his feelings via quotes. “All media is an extension of man” in the same way the wheel is an extension of the foot. I got two theories of what this quote as a whole may mean. Firstly, that media is something very powerful and learning full and it teaches you something everyday. Media extent your knowledge, it make sit bigger and more worthy.
ReplyDeleteI also think that “extension of man” means that the media is so huge. Media has existed for a while, but when technology came it has been sky rocking. What about the next 20/30 years, will the media/internet be overloaded with information? It may be because it’s growing so rapidly. Marshall McLuhan really did a great job with the quote and she describes it from different perspectives. By telling about, the foot, the wheel, clothing and skin. It gives you a better sense of the quotes meaning and it's purpose as well as understanding.
According to the McLuhan, all the technologies we have are the extension of ourselves. Same stands for the media. But what kind of extension are they? Media allows us to access and share different kinds of information. So, media can be an extension to our ability to communicate. But I think it is not just limited to communication. Media is also an extension of our personality, our attitude to the information and its author.
ReplyDeleteaccording to Mcluhan the extension of ourselves is all the technologies but also the media was create by us and we spend so much time in media when we don't learn almost anything. The media also is really ditracted because when we are readying about a new or something somebody can send you a text and then you will be distracted by that text. This is what I think
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with McLuhan about the idea of all media are "the extension of man". Technologies have change the way we understand about media. Nowadays, people in advanced countries are less dependence on newspaper, they spend more of their time on reading news, watching social videos on the Internet. Internet becomes more and more essential to our life, it looks like our eyes, to observe what happen around us, our ears to listen to people scream and to think what can we do. We can consider media as a part of our bodies, without it we will be old-fashioned and can't caught up with the rapid advance in technology.
ReplyDelete"The extension of Man", why would McLuhan connect this to the main character of media at that time. Because basicially, media is a gather of information both from man and for man. People send and create all kinds of information for those who do not know the information yet and so on the information can be spread out. So for example, some Iran terrorists killed an American officer and they want the world to know their purpose to do this. They would put this on media as their way of "extension" to let people know that something like this happened at that location and that time and then the whole progress will spread again.
ReplyDeleteMedia is an extension of Human kind just like a leg is an extension of a foot. Media is in our everyday life weather we want to or not. We currently live in the 21th century meaning media is taking over the world do to all the available technology now a days. Media has became one of our societies everyday routines. We wake up in the morning checking our phone, go have breakfast in the dinning room while watching the news, go to work listning to the radio. Our society is surronded by media weather we notice it or not. Many of us might think that we are not slaves of the media, but thats not the true at all because were actually brainwashed through the media. Media is made by man who brainwah the people, and heard or watched by the people who get brainwashed them selves. Like it or not, this is the truth, it has became a habit to turn on the radio or chekc your phone etc.

DeleteIn the ancient times, men had to think about purpose of life. They started to ask questions and search for the answers. When they found an answer to a certain question, they would build a theory and share it with people. Media was then created. After that, media always existed for humans and lived a life in peace with them. However, the years passed and human beings started to have a deep relationship with media. Suddenly, media started to be so important to the humans that almost no one could live without them. McLuhan then was right when he said that media would turn out to be the extension of men, in a way that it would become a part of men's life, men's body and men's soul. Life, because men are always connected to media. Body because we use technology and media during the whole day. Soul because our spirit needs media to relax. That why media is extension of men, they are a vital part of us.
ReplyDeleteThe "medium" that we are talking about in here is the flow of information, therefore one of the well-know phrase of Marshall McLuan "The medium is the message" was written. It says media is a message that connect one to another, he used lightbulb as an example, even though it doesn't have any content like TV or radio, it transit something from somewhere to another places. From my understanding of the "extension", it's like the word "widen". Knowledge, ideas, message, information etc. can be spread out through media. If we, human, are claim as knowledge, because we have our thoughts and mind, then media is the extension of us, because it can spread out things that we want to say to millions of people or even more.
ReplyDeleteExtension means a part that is added to something to enlarge or prolong it.
ReplyDeleteFoot is what we use to walk, or transport to places. It’s the simple and logic way everyone use. But wheel is an extension of that. People use wheel to travel because it’s easier and more convenient. You don’t get as tired using wheel and you save time.
Eyes are what we use to see the world. Book is what we read to learn and understand the world. It doesn’t matter what we see, if we don’t understand it. That’s why book is an extension of eye— it helps us to understand what we see instead of just looking and pass by. We don’t need book but it’s better to read book.
Skin is the protection of our body. Clothes is the protection of our skin. We are born with skin to cover and protect our tissues and organ inside our body from getting damage. We wear clothes to protect our skins. Clothes us the extension of the skin because we don’t need clothes to protect our skin because skin is already a protection of our body. But it is better to have clothes to protect our skin because the more protection the better.
To sum up what Marshall McLuhan said that “All media is an extension of man [..]” In my opinion, he meant that a man of himself can live without media like we can live without clothes, wheel and book. But it is better for a man to have media because he tend to understand the world better in less time, protect himself from the world in the more convenient way.
As humans develop their way of living (like technological advancements), they tend to explore for new things that can make their lives easy. When humans found the round object "the wheel" that can help them cover large distances with less effort and time consumption. Similarly media and it's viewers have explored a relation which helps them to live better socially.
